VCAL/Vocational Major

By Kerri Fulton

It has been a very busy time for all of our Vocational Major students (formerly known as VCAL). I want to congratulate all of those students that have demonstrated amazing commitment, organisation and resilience in participating in all the events and activities, well done.

Year 11 VCAL Expo:

As part of the Year 11 VCAL student assessment, the students were required to organise a Big Project and show case this at the VCAL Expo.

On Tuesday the 8th November, the Year 11 students held the VCAL Expo to showcase the work they had completed throughout the year. The students displayed tasks from all of their subjects and information about their TAFE and Work Placement participation. A large number of staff and student groups visited on the day and we thank everyone for giving up their time to support the students.

The students had all been working on a Big Project and were able to display their projects on the day. Due to time constraints, some of the students had created models of a future project that they would like to complete. Others were able to display a finished product. We were very proud of all the students’ efforts and impressed by how well they conducted themselves, as classes and staff came around to look at their displays.

Two of our students, Cassie Patten and Lauren Kirkwood 11C, decided to fundraise for an organisation called ‘Little Dreamers’, as their Big Project. This organisation supports young people who provide unpaid care for a family member affected by disability, chronic or mental illness, addiction or frail age.

The students organised a cupcake and cookie sale, using pre-arranged orders. Cassie and Lauren raised $352, a fantastic effort! Thank you to all the staff who ordered the cakes and cookies, especially Ms Weeraratne, who very generously purchased a large number of cupcakes to give to her classes.

Year 12 VCE/Vocational Major Bunnings Fundraiser BBQ

On Thursday 1st December, our 2023 Year 12 VCE-Vocational Major students, ran a fundraising BBQ at Bunnings. The students were raising money for their Community Projects that they will undertake next year. These Community Projects will support Not for Profit Organisations that the students will research and select.

The students worked extremely well as teams, during their rostered time at the BBQ. They had to organise themselves to cook and serve the local community and we were very impressed with the way they handled the pressure on the day, well done.

The students did an amazing job and were able to raise over $740 in profits, a fantastic effort. A huge thank you to Caz Jenkins for being there to support the students for the whole day. We look forward to some amazing Community Projects next year.

Applied Learning Awards (ALA) Winner

The ALAs are awards presented to Applied Learning students. These students are nominated by staff members and are judged and selected from a regional pool of students.

We were very excited to get the news that Kieran Botterill, one of our Year 12 VCAL students, had won the Learning and Personal Development Student of the Year 2022, for the Bayside, Glen Eira and Kingston area!

Kieran came to our final senior assembly to be presented with his certificate and a $250 voucher. We are very proud of Kieran and the award has definitely gone to a very deserving student, well done Kieran.

Thank you also to Stride, who have coordinated the awards and the Bentleigh Moorabbin Central Rotary Club, Big Sisters Big Brothers and BGKLLEN who sponsored the awards.

Rollover for Vocational Major 2022 into 2023

As part of our Rollover timetable for the Vocational Major students, we ran an Amazing Race in the City and a visit to the Melbourne Zoo. These events were to meet a number of outcomes for the student’s 2023 VM course and to also promote team building and organisation.

From all accounts, the students participated very well in all the tasks, working well in teams for the Amazing Race and collecting the required information at the Zoo on the Conservation Projects. Well done to everyone for their participation, thank you to the staff who attended and to Mr Bandara for all the organising.

We wish all of the students and families, a wonderful break and look forward to seeing you all in 2023,

Kerri Fulton and the Vocational Major Team
