STEM Drone Club

The College possesses a number of drones for the students to learn to fly. The students start off flying the TELLO drones and once they show competence and an awareness of the flying rules they move on to better drones. The College also now has a few Mavic Mini 3 drones that are a lot more capable but a little harder to fly. The students flying these drones will work towards the completion of more complex tasks.

Any student is able to join the STEM Drone Club. No experience is necessary and we have drones available for the students to fly. If a student already has a drone they are encouraged to bring it along. A meeting for 2023 students who like to fly drones will be held in the first few weeks of Term 1.

Dungeons & Dragons Club

Dungeons & Dragons is a role playing game that allows students to work cooperatively, imaginatively and positively. The students play an imaginary character with a set of developing characteristics (e.g. A Elf Wizard) with a group of like-minded young people who play different characters. The person running the adventure is called the Dungeon Master (DM), and it is their role to flesh out the scenario as the campaign develops.

The D&D Club is for students and generally run by students. Experienced players are encouraged to become a DM for an adventure so that other students can play. Every year several students volunteer to run different campaigns for different experience levels. Most campaigns run for at least six months during the school year and these adventures normally occur in the College Library after school one afternoon per week.

Mr Connellan normally runs a campaign for beginners called “The Lost Mines of Phandelver”. This adventure normally runs for the entire year. The players learn the rules of D&D and how to play their characters and then we set of from the imaginary city of Neverwinter to find Guncren Rockseeker and the lost mines.

A meeting will be held in the Library in Week 2 of Term 1 to see which students are interested in playing or DMing.

Chess Club

Last year the Chess Club was formed and many students now play chess at lunchtimes. Every term the students will play in a round robin format that runs for that term in the Library. The highlight of the Chess Club is the Magis Chess competition played in the middle of the year.

A meeting will be held in the College Library in Week 2 of Term 1 to take the names of students who wish to play Chess in 2023.

Like last year, the Primary school students will have a term where they play chess in an internal competition. I will discuss with Ms. De Pinto about when this will occur in 2023.

Cross-country training sessions will also start next week on every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00am-8:00am. These sessions will continue into Term 2 up until the ACC Cross-Country Carnival.

Interschool Team Jumpers

After many years of impressive interschool sport results in all three of our major carnivals, we are excited to announce the introduction of a John XXIII Interschool jumper. Once a student makes the interschool team, this will be acknowledged through embroidery on the jumper with the team name (swimming, cross-country or athletics).

Please note:

  • MUST make an interschool team (reserves included)
  • Embroidery will take place after each ACC Carnival
  • Team lists will be sent to the Uniform Shop, ID will be requested prior to purchase
  • Permission to wear the jumper all week of the Interschool carnivals

Congratulations

Congratulations to Eli Zuvela who was selected as a goalkeeper for both the Western Australian Under 13s and Under 15s indoor hockey teams. Both state teams participated in the National indoor hockey tournament held recently in Brisbane during January 2023.

Congratulations to Elsa Engelbrecht who participated in the Youth Water Polo Championships in Perth for UWA U/12s. The girls played seven games in five days and made it to the Grand Final against Queensland. They played a great game and came home with the Silver. Well done Elsa.
