Growth Mindset

We have started the year by working with all students from ELC to Year 9 discussing how to develop a Growth Mindset. A Growth Mindset is believing that you can develop and grow your intelligence in any area through questioning, effort, hard work, and practice. Belief + Action = Growth!

If you are interested in learning more about how parental feedback can influence your child's growth mindset, I encourage you to read this article from Mindset Works

2023 Competitions

Our Launch Program offers many opportunities for your child to shine.

OzCLO

The Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad (OzCLO) is a contest for Middle and Senior School students involving decoding real languages.  It involves solving language puzzles in a fun team environment, competing against teams from across South Australia in Round 1. Our College has a legacy of success, enjoyment, and participation in the OzClo and the State competition, SACLO.

This year, the first round of OzClo will take place online in Week 5, Wednesday 1 March, from 1-4pm at Emmaus. There are two separate competitions for Senior School students and for Middle School students.

If your child is interested, and would be keen to use their problem-solving skills and enjoy a fun team competition, email Sarah Grieger and let her know you're interested ASAP.

Head to the OzCLO website for training materials and past competitions.

PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITIONS

We provide many opportunities at Emmaus for students to develop their public speaking skills. We are involved in the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition (for students aged 12-14) and in the Voice of Youth Rostrum Public Speaking Competition (for students in Year 7 - 12)

For the past seven years, we have had students who have reached the finals in either or both competitions, and we have had a student win the Nationals in Sydney which was very exciting!

Lunchtime training is provided for all students who are interested to support them in practice and skill development.

If your child would like to participate in developing their public speaking skills please email Susanne Milne.

Debating SA Competition

Debating at Emmaus Christian College is growing, and we want as many students as possible to discover the benefits and develop skillls for debating. Last year, our Brooklyn Park Year 5/6 team and our Senior team both progressed to the Finals!

We participate in Debating SA with teams from Year 5 - Year 12 from both Brooklyn Park and South Plympton.

Debating offers a chance to develop:

  • Public Speaking confidence – a chance to excel with their creative use of spoken language
  • Forming and structuring well-reasoned arguments - a skill that students need for essay writing throughout their school life
  • Working as a team in a verbal ‘sport’ to convince an adjudicator of the merits of their argument.
  • Debating is a team activity - the students are able to help and encourage one another toward success and growth.
  • The ‘growth mindset’ learning of overcoming the challenges of this activity teaches valuable life skills.

Interschool competition occurs in the evenings at various locations in Adelaide. There are five competitions every three weeks and weekly team training is provided. Parents need to be able to transport and supervise students during the evening debate.

If you would like your child to be involved in this or would like further information please email Susanne Milne.
