Senior Boy’s Cricket Round 1

On Tuesday February the 7th Nossal’s senior boy’s cricket team headed out to the windswept plains of Sweeney reserve for our first round. Our first game was against Hallam, always a tough assignment with Hallam’s rich record of sporting prowess. We batted first and amassed a very respectable total of 124 runs from our allocated 15 overs. Abhay Bolisetty and Tarith Colonbage batted really well. So well that they had to retire both having scored 30 not out. To win Hallam needed 8 1/3  runs per over. Could they do it? ... Short answer, no.

Against our opening fast bowlers in Ronit Rehal and Jaskabeer Singh, Hallam struggled to score early ultimately leaving the players later on down the order with an impossible task. In the end Hallam was only able to score 71 runs.

A good win for us and in the next round we played the winners of the match which had been played on the adjoining oval, Gleneagles SC. Gleneagles had smashed their opponents, Fountain Gate, in that match and had reached their target in only 5 overs. We knew we were in for a tough match.

Once again we batted first and after a slower start we got some real momentum happening and managed to reach a score of 122 from our 15 overs. Abhay Bolisetty once again dominated and was again forced to retire on 30 not out. Jaskabeer had a great knock and also retired on 30 not out. Other strong contributors were Milan Panjetta (19 not out) and Ronit Rehal (18). This was an excellent score but would it be enough against the very quick scoring Gleneagles?

Gleneagles opened well, with one of their openers scoring 12 and the other 20. However, the run rate was starting to get away from them and in a bid to score quick runs a ball was hit high into the outfield where a great catch was taken. Then a few balls later the other opener absolutely smashed a ball straight at Tanish Bedi who was fielding maybe 20 metres from the bat. No time to get out of the way and Tanish stood his ground and took an absolutely stunning catch. This was the catch which turned the game and soon after their number three was bowled. The match continued but the back had been broken and in the end Gleneagles scored 5/73. The wickets were evenly spread with Tanish and Jaskabeer both getting 2 wickets. Our bowling was excellent but what separated the two teams was our brilliant fielding. Gleneagles had dropped a few catches and when it really mattered we held some brilliant catches. And so the old saying catches win matches was once again held to be true.

So now it is on to round 2 which will be held on February the 21st. Go Nossal!
