Precinct Traffic Safety Committee Update
Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard has a speed limit of 20 kmh. There are 3 Shared Zones which are indicated with signage and a raised paved area. Shared Zones have a speed limit of 10 kmh. Please be aware that pedestrians have right of way on a Shared Zone. There is a roundabout at the Clyde Road entry. There 2 pedestrian crossings - outside Federation University and at the end of Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard, outside Nossal High School.
It is important that drivers of all vehicles moving in and around the precinct observe all road signage and road rules. The speed limits have been put in place to ensure the safety of all pedestrians, including our students. Currently there is concern about some vehicles being driven too fast which has the potential to cause accidents.
All drivers are urged to be patient and observe the road rules in the precinct. It is a policy requirement of the Department of Education and a major safety concern for Campus Traffic Safety Committee who have advised that should the problem persist, police will be asked to attend during peak times.
Once arrived at Nossal please ensure you follow all posted signage including no standing zones. (Please see the map below). Where there is no speed limit indicated, cars must be driven at walking pace only.
Pedestrians also have a role to play in traffic safety. An additional safety problem is the increasing number of students who are walking and crossing roadways while listening to devices through headphones. Drivers report students crossing in front of them without looking and clearly not hearing a car is nearby.
Students are reminded to look both ways before crossing any road and only cross when safe to do so. Do not rely on traffic lights alone. There have been reports of near misses when vehicles have run a red light.
Federation University's security have previously reported that there is several Nossal students who walk through Buchanan Park and then through the university car park to go to school. Student must not walk through the Federation University carpark. The footpath that runs parallel to Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard must be used for pedestrian access to Nossal High School.
Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF)
Submitting an application
The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) system is open for schools to enter applications from 30 January 2023. Parents/carers wishing to apply for CSEF payments for 2023 must submit their application form to the relevant school before 23 June 2023.
However, a parent/carer will only be required to submit an application form to the school in the following circumstances:
- the parent/carer is applying for the CSEF payment for the first time – i.e. an application form was not lodged with the school in the previous year, or
- circumstances have changed – for example, there has been a change in the care arrangement of the student, a change of name or CRN, or a new sibling has started at the school and the parent/carer wishes to apply for the CSEF payment for the new sibling also.
Where a parent/carer is not required to submit a new application, schools can rollover/copy the previous year’s application on the CSEF system to the current school year.
Schools must retain application forms for a minimum of 7 years.
CSEF applications may be audited by the department.

Foundation Assembly 2023
Remember that feeling when you, for the first time, rode a bike without training wheels? Or perhaps that time you achieved something so wonderful you couldn’t wait to get home to tell your parents? A lot of us probably felt the same way on Monday 30 January, except it might not have been a feeling of ecstasy. It might have been a feeling of ‘oh… this is nearly the end,’ or a sense of nostalgia. You were once in Year 9, heart buzzing with curiosity and nervousness, a bright mind filled with sheer perspicacity. Now, someone wise, a leader who would guide the new Year 9 partnered with you throughout their first year at Nossal. You were the face of Nossal now.
The Year 9 Foundation Assembly was the first of the many stepping-stones that a typical Nossal Year 9 completed as part of an induction into Nossal. The Foundation Assembly is the first gathering for Year 9s and Year 12s - where the Year 9s are inducted into Nossal and are told of what Nossal has to offer. Our namesake, Sir Gustav Nossal, along with Ms Mackin and our school leadership group welcomed the new students and staff, alongside wishing the Year 12s a successful year ahead. I remember coming into school, seeing so many unfamiliar faces and feeling uneasy. The gym was filled with other Year 9s, all in their oversized uniforms, and then and there, it was a time of possibility, a time of sonder, a time where we all realised we were living in the moment. We were part of Nossal’s community.
I felt old. Old in the way of “mother, put me down – I’m big enough!” yet not being fulfilled enough, still wanting to cherish the warmth of safety, protection and happiness. I felt the walls of the school reverberate through the aeons. Three years back. I was here. We were here. Quiet, meek, maybe a bit of boldness. Laughter. Then came the “Hey, what’s your name? I’m going to be your buddy for today!”
Maybe requited with “It’s so good to meet you, I’m…”
After the Nossal badge was distributed to the new Year 9s and the Year 12 badge for us, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and belonging within the school. It felt surreal, not being at Nossal High for a whole day after the holidays yet feeling content and at home – the kindness and joy of the staff and students at this school was beautiful.
On the same day, friendships were made, bonds were created, smiles were given, and serendipity was thrown around. It was a magnificent, lovely yet exciting experience, and the Foundation Assembly truly has had a lasting impact on this year’s cohort of Year 9s and Year 12s.
