Teaching and Learning in 6C

          Striking Gold!

Students in 6C have been learning about the gold rush and the Eureka Stockade this term as part of their Inquiry curriculum and what fun we have had!

All students were given a role for the term such as a Digger, Trooper, Chinese Miner, Blacksmith, Cook, Doctor, Banker, or a Bushranger! They started off with 10 pounds at the start of the term along with their mining licences. It was all fun and games until the Troopers came along and fined them for unnecessary reasons, e.g. a wrinkled, unkept mining licence.

Some students were lucky by finding gold and taking it to the bank to cash it in. Gold nuggets were rewarded to students to earn money, along with a maths game as another method for finding gold! When taken to the bank the nugget was weighed by the Banker to determine how much money was earned. Students soon learned that the Troopers didn’t have to do much to earn money and diggers were always handing over their money.

Students also presented their term homework task based on immigration to Australia. There were so many creative ideas and old suitcases full of facts and memorabilia from their families. Many students learned things about their own families that they did not know or researched other people of interest. We had a few students choose Anh Do and even Peter Lalor as a person of interest. Thankyou to all of the parents and grandparents who assisted with this task.
