Teaching and Learning in FOOD SCIENCE
Over the last 3 weeks I have had the pleasure of taking food science lessons with the amazing Year 4 cohort in Al’s absence.
Over the 3 weeks students made french toast fingers, cheese scones and apple pie pockets with ice cream and maple syrup.
During Food Science the students worked as a team. They worked together and each had a role in preparing the ingredients ready for cooking. Over the three weeks the students were very hands on as they measured ingredients using various utensils such as 1 cup, ½ cup, 1 tablespoon, ½ tablespoon etc. The students worked with puff pastry, they whisked eggs, floured their surfaces, kneaded dough, and worked with lots of different ingredients to create their recipe. While the food is cooking, the students write the yummy recipes in their inquiry books as they patiently wait.
The french toast fingers was served with a light dusting of cinnamon sugar and a drizzle of maple syrup. These were a hit with the students and teachers, in particular Mr B.
The cheese scones were a little more difficult to perfect and as a result not all of the scones turned out. The end result was a little hit and miss amongst the year 4 students. It wasn’t a favourite but the students really enjoyed the process. They had to blend the flour and butter with their fingertips until it resembled breadcrumbs. Then the students needed to add milk and fold it until it came together without being too sticky. Once it reached the correct texture it was ready for them to knead the dough and add the cheese.
Last week the students made Apple Pie Pockets served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of maple syrup. This was a definitely a favouite with some of the students wanting to make this at home.
I asked the students what they enjoy most about Food Science and these are some of their responses.
Sienna said, “Seeing Al, Isabella and cooking”.
Xavier said, “Making amazing food and good dishes”.
Alistair said, “I enjoy food science because the teamwork is good, and I like cooking”.
Ruby said, “Apple pie pockets and ice cream was my favourite”.
Evelyn said, “We get to spend time cooking food but when I give the food to the teachers that has to be my favourite thing”.
Leah said, “I enjoy eating and making the food with my classmates”.
Grace said, “Eating all of the yummy food and learning how to make all the good food”.
Overall, the students enjoy being hands on and sampling their dishes.
Thank you for an AMAZING few weeks. Welcome back Al!
