Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

Just a reminder that the Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 8 September 2023.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers.

Children from Year 3 to Year 6 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

Writing in Prep - 2

This week we say Great Job! … to all of our wonderful writers in the junior school.

The Prep children have been learning to spell, use capital letters and make sentences. Here are a few examples of some lovely little stories from our Prep students.

A story with a difference!

Here is a fun way to create stories. Evan from grade 1/2 created this lovely informative story using words and pictures. This type of story is called a REBUS story. You might like to try writing one of these at home. Just find an old magazine, brochure or flyer and cut out different pictures. Put the pictures together with some words and make a story, or an information text.

Fun with Literacy @Home

Language is a superbly rich resource: not only for reading, writing and speaking but also for playing games.

Good news – these words games need little or no equipment and are free to play anywhere anytime.

Here are a couple to try this fortnight!

GAME 1: Hidden Words (3 ways)

# Any number of players

? Word finding game

:-) Played by writing or speaking

? Played with pencils and paper if writing, else no equipment if by speaking

OBJECTIVE: To find words hidden inside sentences.

PROCEDURE: This game can be played in different ways.

One player can hide a word inside a sentence for another player to find.

EXAMPLE 1:

He made errors all the time. The hidden word in this sentence is deer.

It is easier to play this way if you write the sentences down.

Using a list of single words only – find any words in them.

EXAMPLE 2:

Hand, mat, mascots, word…

(Pssst. Did you notice mascots has 2 words in it, as and cot).

OR get really tricky and…

Using a list of single words only – find words that have animals in them.

EXAMPLE 3:

Scat, kneel, bath…

(Pssst. You can also use proverbs or sayings too).
