Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Well done to our Cross Country team who won the Primary and finished second in the Secondary AIC championships last Wednesday at Curlew Park. The commitment, hard work, and team-first mentality of the whole squad proved our strength as Marist were successful in the Year 5 and 12 years as well as second in Year 6, 14, 15, 16 years and Open and third in 13 years. It was an outstanding effort from the entire team who should be very proud of their efforts. The commitment to training and hard work was evident and ultimately rewarded on the day. Thank you to Coordinator Mr Mitch Reid, Head Coach Mr Shane Ward, and the entire coaching and support team for your leadership, support, and guidance of the boys.

As we head into the last weekend of the Term 2 sports the College acknowledges and thanks the Year 12 boys for their efforts over the years, many of whom have played year on year since Year 5. I wish you all the very best for your final matches this weekend in the blue and gold. We hope that you engage with the Old Boys and return to cheer on your old school in the future. No doubt the tries will get bigger and the goals more spectacular as the years go by, but hopefully the memories never fade.

This weekend sees us take on St Edmund’s College in Super Saturday here at Marist. It is sure to be a big day with us Old Boys and Boarding families joining us. Make sure you get down and cheer on both our First teams in their final matches of the year.

Last Saturday saw us return to Runcorn to take on St Laurence’s College in chess, football, and rugby in the St Laurence’s Back to Runcorn day. All three first matches were keenly contested with the Chess boys going down 10-6, football losing 4-2 after leading 2-1 at half-time and rugby losing 20-16 after leading for most of the match. The trend across all three contests was quite similar with SLC proving to be a little bit more “street smart” and maybe a little bit more experienced at winning key contests than our boys, who in all three matches displayed great Marist values of sportsmanship, commitment, and integrity, in taking the contest to their more fancied opposition.

Overall, Chess won the Senior A and overall had 3 wins, a draw and 3 losses against the benchmark school in the competition. In football, for the first time this season we lost the head-to-head goal tally 54 (goals for) to 70 (goals against), -16 overall matches. To put this in context, our trial against SLC was -46, and our season tally so far after six rounds is +238 (573-238). In rugby, we won the day overall with 594 points for to 424 points against (+170) which is consistent with our season across six rounds, though significantly down from our trial round against SLC 970-335 (+635). Overall, the season has been 4376 points for to 2464 against +1912 differential.

With our Term 2 sports coming to an end this weekend our attention moves to our Term 3 sports with basketball, rugby league, tennis, hockey and track and field starting very soon. Please make sure you have registered to play. Trial details will become available on the College App over the coming days.

Football

Mr Derek Lennon (Football Coordinator)

It was great to see a significant improvement in our round six results against St Laurence’s over our trial round results. Most impressively is this being an away round, where the trial was played at home. This suggests our boys along with our coaches are doing a good job at developing and improving their individual ability, their team play and their ability to work for a result.

The 1st XI were a touch unlucky in their loss to St Laurence’s. Leading 2-1 at half-time, the team were handling a fired-up, aggressive SLC team and for 50 minutes were comfortable, despite the efforts of SLC to create opportunities. At 2-all Marist had a couple of chances inside a minute to retake the lead which we didn’t take, and quickly SLC were able to go down the other end and take the lead for the first time, and from there it was very tough.

Overall, we enjoyed a great day of competition against the benchmark program in the competition and the Marist teams across the age groups and the divisions stood up and gave their all. As mentioned above, there was nothing in it all day with a lot of draws and games that were won by the odd goal one way or the other.

This Saturday is our final matches of the season against St Edmund’s College, here at Marist. Most teams are at home this week but please check the draw carefully as we have many supp matches.

Student Achievements

Nicholas Keir (Hockey)

Congratulations to Nicholas Keir who captained the Met North team at the recent State Championships, gaining selection in the Queensland under-19 schoolboys team. Nick has also been selected for the Queensland under-18 club and Queensland indoor hockey teams in what has been a huge year for him. Nick is a key member of our Marist hockey team which starts their 2023 season very soon. We wish him well for his upcoming representative challenges.

Cross Country

Mr Mitch Reid - Cross Country Coordinator

AIC Cross Country Championship

Firstly, congratulations to all students on a fantastic AIC Cross Country season. The hard work, commitment, and strong team culture that Marist cross country is known for was again on display on Wednesday at Curlew Park.

Congratulations to our primary school squad for winning the AIC Primary Aggregate! The Year 5 team had a dominant display and the Year 6 team backed them up to make sure we took home the title. Thank you to the Primary Head of Sport – Mr John Lambourne for his support of cross country throughout the year.

Our secondary school squad had strong performances throughout the day, with many boys running personal best placings in their age group. From the start, we knew it was going to be a two-school battle with Iona College for the Aggregate and each age group gave it their all on the day. Our aim was to win a 7th consecutive title and although we came up just short of this in 2023, all members of the squad should be extremely proud of their performance and contribution to the program.

Please see below final age level and Marist Cross Country Age Champions results (awarded to the students who finished first across the line in each age level) - Well done boys!

To the Year 12 students who competed in their last AIC Championship, well done and thank you for your contribution to the program over many years. You have been great role models to younger students within the program and you all should be extremely proud of your performances on Wednesday.

Finally, a special thank you must go to all of those who were involved in the Cross Country program this year. Without the tireless early mornings, behind the scenes work of Head Coach Mr Shane Ward and our fantastic group of Squad Supervisors (Mr Fergal Apps, Mr Jordy Chugg, Mr William Burkett, Mr Brendan Jansons, Mr Brendan Saunders, Mr Tyler Newell, and, Mr Thomas Prole, Mr Zack Newsham) alongside the parents, carers and families who have supported the boys through the season, the program couldn’t have the success it does.

As we have many boys trialling for year levels we are able to take a maximum of 12 students for each year level - eight players and four reserves.

Those picked as reserves can make the team at any time throughout the season, with hard work and continued improvement, and we hope to see these boys push for selection during the season.

We will train and value these boys even though you were not picked to represent in the Match team for AIC, you are a huge part of whether the team is successful and we will help to keep pushing all boys to keep our program in the AIC evolving and improving each year.

All students are reminded they must be in Marist training uniform for each session.

I would like to thank all who have trialed so far and wish everyone the very best of luck in fulfilling your dream of representing Marist Tennis this year.
