Year 7
Year 7 Mathematics
Aviation Projects
This term, all Year 7 students will be working on their STEM Aviation projects. The two-week project will allow the students to create their own planes by working collaboratively with their peers. The STEM project will cover a variety of mathematics, science, technology, and engineering concepts, such as measurement, speed, percentage change, engineering design principles and critical and creative thinking skills.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the activity, which allowed them to apply their mathematical skills to a real-life investigation and learn in a hands-on manner.
I really enjoyed doing the Aviation Project because it taught me how to problem solve and focus on the very specific details otherwise your plane won't fly! We were able to work alone yet shared lots of ideas with our peers on how to improve our planes. Overall, this was one of the best subjects I've had before and would encourage everyone to try and make their plane! Vera Mae Wood
For Term 2 Maths, the classes of Year 7 were given the task of independently building our own planes. It was an extremely fun task as we got to work by ourselves on our projects, but the teacher was always there in case we needed help. After three lessons of construction, many of the students in my class were ready to test their wooden planes for flight. With the help of the teacher, we managed to connect our planes to an energy source called a CTG pole to see if they could fly. We collected the flight data such as flight time, height and speed. Overall, the task was very exhilarating and fun, and our class can’t wait to learn more about aviation! Alexis Tremoulis
