NAIDOC Week 2023 - For Our Elders

🌿We're thrilled to share that NAIDOC Week 2023, which will take place from Sunday, July 2 to Sunday, July 9, these school holidays. Aligned with our commitment to celebrating and learning from the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of our First Nations peoples, this year's theme, 'For Our Elders', holds a special significance.
'For Our Elders' is a tribute to our community's First Nations Elders. As the guardians of our stories, traditions, and wisdom, they have paved the way for future generations and continue to guide us in our journey toward reconciliation and unity. As aptly put by Bobbi Lockyer, "Where there is knowledge, there are our Elders. Our Elders are the foundation of our communities and role models for our children."
While NAIDOC Week provides a focused opportunity to celebrate, we persist in our dedication to recognising, respecting, and incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures into our everyday learning.
Here are some ways that you and your family can immerse yourselves in the celebrations:
📖Learn and Share Stories: Read about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture, and achievements, and discuss them as a family.
🎪Participate in Local Events: Attend community events, including art exhibits, music performances, storytelling sessions, and cultural workshops that celebrate NAIDOC Week. The Gunditjmara Aboriginal Cooperative and The Warrnambool Library will be hosting events.
🗣️Engage in Respectful Conversations: Encourage dialogue about the importance of respect, reconciliation, and the role of Elders in our society.
🎬Watch Documentaries or Films: A wealth of resources are available that explore the rich tapestry of First Nations peoples' histories and cultures. Enjoy a family movie night that's both entertaining and educational.
🛍️Support Indigenous Businesses: Consider purchasing from businesses owned and operated by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Warrnambool Blak Market is a great place to start.
In the spirit of unity and learning, let's participate in this celebration and acknowledge the past, present, and future contributions of our First Nations peoples, with a special focus this year on the invaluable teachings and wisdom of our Elders.
Here's to a meaningful and educational NAIDOC Week 2023!
