Managing Overwhelm

Experiencing stress at school or outside of school can sometimes leave us feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes this comes from pressure to do well, balancing sporting commitments and school or sometimes it is just the amount of information that is forced upon us by media at any given time. Many studies have linked student wellbeing and their academic performance.

In our lives today, we are constantly surrounded by technology. Information is easy to be created, disseminated and shared. Smartphones and watches, gaming and various online platforms rapidly push out content, some age appropriate, most unfortunately not.

Our youth have surrounded themselves with these devices and learning is a process to get knowledge. Our challenge is to create opportunities to learn with support, guidance and conversation. We need to respect the boundaries of what their brain is capable of.

As adults we are able to take new information and incorporate what we already know about a topic. How can our youth do that when they are forming their knowledge library? The information may not be harmful, however, there is an ever increasing need for us to work with them to develop critical thinking skills as they may not have fully developed their processing skills.

Our SchoolTV has a wonderful special report for you to view to help us better understand our children and their digital landscape.
