Year 10 Japanese

Japanese Culture

Year 10 Japanese students have spent the last three weeks focusing on learning about Japanese culture, in particular how each area of Japan is famous for its own unique foods, produce and history.

Students worked in small groups to translate a recipe for Gyoza (small fried dumplings) from Japanese to English, learning key words relating to the ingredients, method and cooking techniques. The translation was further negotiated through whole class discussion as students considered how best to convey meaning from the Japanese text into English.

On Friday students had the opportunity to actually cook the Gyoza, using their recipe as a reference. Many students experimented with original approaches to Gyoza wrapping and tried a range of fillings including mushroom and chicken. Despite a few difficulties with dumplings sticking to the pan, everyone managed to cook and enjoy eating delicious tasting Gyoza!
