Plenty Happening in Solomon House

On the 6 August the Year 10 Solomon students headed off for work experience. There was some great stories and feedback to come back to the school. The common theme was how impressive our Year 10 students were at their respective work places. We had students working at Channel 9, the Melbourne Magistrates Court, Cricket Victoria, Carlton FC, Melbourne Storm, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and many more Schools, Universities and Businesses both large and small. It was a great experience for our young men to get a taste of the working life. Hopefully it gave them a brief look at what life beyond the College may hold and what they want to pursue as a future career. Congratulations to Ms Sherine Burl and all the students who ventured out of the comfort of school and into the work force.

Year 10 Grampians camp was a great success. On 13 August 55 year 10 Solomon students headed to Halls gap for a 5 day stay at Camp Tandara. The camp was about getting out of your comfort zone and experience the beauty of the Grampians with your class mates. It was certainly a physically and mentally challenging camp.  The boys braved the typically wet and windy Victorian winter weather and took it in their stride.  As soon as we had arrived at Camp Tandara in Grampians national park, we went straight into action with a hike to Boronia peak. The next two days consisted of a hike to the Pinnacles as well as going out to Lake Bellfield where we enjoyed canoeing even though the water was absolutely freezing.

Alongside this we had also had an all-day tour of hiking through Hollow Mountain. There was also Rock Climbing and many more activities. Thanks goes to Mr Strom and Mr Anderson who coordinate the camp and made it a great experience for students and staff. Personally I would also like to thanks the teachers Ms. Maclean, Mr Martyn and Mr. Jacobs who all volunteered and gave up their time to spend the week on camp. The boys left the camp physically exhausted but also with an appreciation for what is at home.

Term 3 has also seen Parent/Teacher interviews, House football, House Music, Visual Art and a House Short Film Competition. It’s a busy time to be a Solomon Student. As the end of Term approaches we would like to wish the year 12 students all the best for their study and Examination preparations.

One final note we would like to recognise the feast day of Saint Solomon which was on September 2nd. It was on this day in 1792.  Saint Solomon was martyred for his beliefs. Brother Solomon was secretary to Brother Agathon, the Superior General, after having been a teacher, director and bursar. He always showed a great love for people and a great attachment to his work. He was the first one of our martyrs and also the first Brother to be beatified.

Saint Solomon is a shining example of what it means to live by Per Vias Rectas by Right Paths.
