History and Geography

Students of all year levels have been very busy during Term 3, attending a number of excursions and fieldwork activities.

Year 8 students recently visited the Vikings: Beyond the Legend exhibition at the Melbourne Museum. Students had the rare privilege of viewing genuine Viking artefacts that have been on loan to Victoria from the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm. Some of the relics included swords dating from 700-1100CE, jewellery, clothing, household tools, ceramics, game pieces, bones and musical instruments. The definite highlight for the students was viewing the Krampmacken, a replica of a nine-metre Viking merchant boat found in Gotland Island in Sweden in the 1920's.

As part of their Term 3 program, Year 10 History students visited the Melbourne Immigration Museum and the Jewish Holocaust Centre. At the Holocaust Centre, students had the unique opportunity to listen to the experiences and reflections of a Holocaust survivor which was a very moving experience for all who attended.

Year 10 Geography students have also undertaken recent fieldwork activities comparing the liveability factors of Mentone and Richmond. Fieldwork plays a very important role in Geography, as it allows the boys to apply their skills in a practical context.
