Junior School Report

Students in the Junior School have been extremely busy throughout a long and cold Term Three. Here are some of the exciting activities they have undertaken so far and with many more to come in the next four weeks.

KIOSC

On Monday 22 July, the Year 7 students attended KIOSC to take part in educational workshops with a focus on living and building a community on Mars. Students shared ideas on what would be needed to live on Mars and analysed success of their designs and creations.

“It was an amazing experience and I would love to do it again. I had so much fun learning new things and doing the Mars related activities with my friend”.

Challenge Program

On Wednesday 14 August, the students in Year 8 and Year 9 took part in the first session of four of our Respectful Relationships Challenge Program. They participated in a number of activities which included an Improvisation Drama session with a focus on resilience, thinking on one’s feet and to be exposed to unpredictable situations, and Bubble Soccer to help reinforce team work and the importance of physical activity for one’s own wellbeing.

“I enjoyed the activities because everybody got involved and had a good time”.

Mady De Lacy 9A

“I enjoyed the work we did. I was proud of myself and I put a lot of effort into it”.

Aboriginal Cultural Walk

On Monday 19 August, seven of our students from both the Junior School and the Senior School were invited to take part in a full day of discovery on an Aboriginal Cultural Walk to explore the Wurundjeri Stories at Pound Bend in Warrandyte. Students took part in the Welcome to Country Acknowledgement and Smoking Ceremony, and learnt the ways of their indigenous heritage before we were offered some ‘interesting’ but delicious lunch. Before heading home, students were given an opportunity to practise their boomerang throwing skills and how to light a fire under the watchful eyes of their Aboriginal Educator, Chris Humes and a number of members from Victoria Police who also spent the entire day talking with our students and taking part in the activities themselves.

“Overall this day was incredibly interesting…I really enjoyed that we got to learn about this occasionally taboo topic…I hope that Scoresby SC continues to awaken students to their cultural heritage”.

Harrison Voysey 7C

“The day was great, it made me want to connect with my indigenous heritage”.

Night of the Notables

The Night of the Notables is a Year 9 English assessment task that assess our speaking - an essential skill that is pertinent to our future.

On August 20 2019 the Year 9’s Night Of The Notables took place.

Prior to the event students spent five weeks researching about their notable figure and preparing for the night. These Notable people range from both past and present and include people such as Christopher Columbus, Lebron James, Freddie Mercury and Felix Kjellberg just to name a few.

“It was a very fun night that went by too fast” - Richard Tang (James Cordon).

It was a fantastic night that we will all remember.

Thank you to the staff members at Scoresby Secondary College for helping the students and organising the event.

Thank you also to everyone who came to see us on the night.

Charles Wallace, Jed Bradford

“I enjoyed seeing everyone’s stalls come together on the night and seeing all the work we did pay off”.

Amaya Phillips 9A

“I really enjoyed the night because everyone was interested in my work.  Also I met many people, they were very nice”.

Symposium

This semester in English, the Year 8 students were given the opportunity to form groups and learn about and present a topic important to us - a topic that could help improve our community of Knox.

At the end of the unit, we presented our learning and ideas in the form of political campaigns at the 2nd annual Scoresby Symposium.  Each political party had the opportunity to be creative as possible.

We presented in front of fellow students, teachers, politicians and special guests from Thermo Fisher and the Department of Education.  Everyone present then voted for the political party they thought was the most persuasive.  Thermo Fisher also presented a special award.

We will always remember this amazing experience we had and we would like to thank all the staff and teachers who made this possible for us.

Big Science Competition

Earlier this year a number of students in Years 7 – 10 competed in the Big Science competition, an international competition to challenge students’ critical thinking and problem solving skills as well as their scientific knowledge.  In 50 minutes a number of students achieved excellent results and were awarded either a Distinction or Credit.  In addition to the excellent individual results, the overall data indicated that Scoresby students achieved significantly above average marks on questions involving interpreting and evaluating scientific evidence.

Congratulations to our top award winners

Terra Cotta Warrior Excursion

On the Wednesday 21 August, the Year 7 cohort went on an excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria for the Terra Cotta Warriors and Cai Guoqiang’s exhibition.
