SRC 2020

We are pleased to welcome the 2020 College Captains to the SRC.

DJ McFarlane and Brooke Reid will take the helm as Captains, whilst Bela Cetkovic and Jordyn McKinnon are Co-Captains.

They will lead the SRC in their representation of the student voice IN 2020.

We are looking for leaders from all levels to join the SRC. Talk to your Year Level leaders to see how you can be a part of this dynamic group.

Youth Environment Leaders Forum

In late November a group of Year 8 students attended a forum at Monash Peninsula to learn about the environmental catastrophes that are overtaking the world. The forum was sponsored by Peta Murphy, MP, and supported by Frankston Council. The students learnt about the aim of Monash to be totally off the grid for their power needs by 2030. They are well on their way to providing all their own electricity. Gas will take longer! Students from Frankston HS presented a summary of what their Environmental group has achieved within their school relating to rubbish and awareness of the plastic problems. They collected hundreds of signatures on a climate change petition, which was then presented to Parliament by Peta Murphy. Mt. Eliza SC graphically demonstrated the many sources of pollution in Kananook Creek, from its mouth to where it flows into the sea at Frankston Beach. It was truly disgusting and horrifying!

Plastic Pollution in our oceans

The next speaker spoke about the need for ‘Zero Waste Living’ and presented many alarming facts and statistics. However, she left students with a message of hope – that they can do something, in many small ways – to help their environment.

Next was a hands on activity to re-purpose an old T-shirt into a functional tote bag. The final act of the day was for all participants to sign a convention, committing to fighting for the environment.

The day was intense and, at times, disturbing, but created an overall sense of purpose and drive in all participants.

Calling all future leaders

Frankston Youth Council are currently looking for 2020 Youth Councillors.

The Frankston Youth Council are a youth action group and advocacy that are made up of twenty 12-24 year olds who live/work/study within the Frankston municipality. Young people who participate in the Frankston Youth Council come from a range of different backgrounds and have many varied life experiences.

To give an example of what Frankston Youth Council do during the year, they:

· provide advice and suggestions to Frankston City Council on issues that may affect young people in the community

· plan and organise run youth projects

· volunteer at events and within the community

· hearing from guest speakers from the community

· and having the opportunity to participate in training and workshops..

If you or a young person you know are interested, please complete a Frankston Youth Council application form and send your completed application to youthcouncil@frankston.vic.gov.au or hand in your application to Youth Central – 60a Playne St. Frankston by the 20th of December, 2019. If shortlisted, interviews will be held in January.

To be a part of Youth Council, they must be:

· -Aged between 12 to 24yrs (at the time of appointment)

· -Commit to 1 year on the Youth Council

· -Be available to fortnightly meetings (currently on Wednesday nights)

· -Living, working and/or studying within the Frankston municipality (Frankston, Frankston South, Frankston North, Carrum Downs, Seaford, Langwarrin, Sandhurst, Skye).

Selection for the Frankston City Youth Council will take into account a fair balance of the following criteria: age, education, employment/unemployment, cultural background and suburbs of Frankston. It is considered that Youth Council will consist of 20 members.
