Year 11 Politics And Law Excursion

On Wednesday, one of the Year 11 Politics and Law classes had an excursion to various law courts in the central city area and to Parliament House. At the District Court of Western Australia, students sat in on two criminal trials: the first, was a case concerning depravation of liberty, unlawful assault and the destruction of property; the second case involved the charge of assault occasioning bodily harm (AOBH)…a pub brawl gone wrong! The students were a little disappointed to miss out of the people smuggling case, but the excitement of Question Time more than made up for it!

Premier, Mark McGowan made time to speak to the students about the role of government and his plans for WA’s future. Question Time was especially spirited…tensions were naturally high, with the budget being released the next day…with the Leader of the Opposition, Mike Nahan, on this third and final warning, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly threatened to cancel question time unless everyone took a seat and settled down! Who said Politics and Law wasn’t fun!!!!

Many thanks to Ms Anna Marie Mangen (student teacher) for accompanying the class on the excursion.

Tournament Of The Minds

Tournament of the Minds is a problem-solving challenge that encourages and develops creativity and higher order thinking amongst young people. The Tournament process provides a platform for excellence and equips participants with strategies and skills which will support future success.

On Saturday, 26  August our school had three teams compete in the Tournament of the Minds, regional finals in the areas of Social Science, Maths and Engineering and Language Literature.

Teams consisted of seven students from Year 7-10.  Each team was presented with a demanding open ended challenge which they had six weeks to work on prior to the regional finals.

All three teams put in a lot of time and work prior to the competition to complete their challenge which they then presented to judges in a ten minute performance. On the day students were also presented with a spontaneous challenge which tests their creativity and team work skills under time pressure.

All teams performed extremely well on the day with the Maths and Engineering and Social Science teams both being successful in making it through to the State finals.  The State finals are held this Sunday at Edith Cowan University followed by a presentation of results at 5:30pm at Sacred Heart College.

We wish all team members listed below and their facilitators the best of luck this weekend.   Let our young people’s creative minds continue to be challenged.
