Diocesan Football Trials
On Wednesday 23 May, fifty students travelled to Inverell for the Diocesan Football trials. The three teams, Open Boys', Open Girls' and Junior Boys' made a great effort and played some outstanding football.
The Open Boys' team had a tense nil all draw against St Mary’s, Gunnedah before going down 1-0 to O’Connor, Armidale. In the match against O’Connor the boys were down an early goal but had the better of the play in the second half and were unlucky a couple of shots narrowly missed the goal.
The Junior Boys' started with a comprehensive 3-1 win against St Mary's, Gunnedah, before two draws against Holy Trinity, Inverell and St Philomenia’s, Moree. In the last game, the Junior Boys' came up against a much bigger and older team from O’Connor and were well beaten. The Junior Boys' should be proud of their efforts on the day.
The Senior Girls' had a great tournament going through undefeated. The skills, fitness and teamwork on display was outstanding. They will now travel to Coffs Harbour on Wednesday 13 June to play in the Inter-Diocesan final against Trinity College, Lismore.

Friday Night Rugby Competition
The Friday Night Rugby Union competition has now seen three rounds of action with all teams competing successfully and playing some great Rugby.
The Open Girls' team remained undefeated after defeating Peel High School three tries to one. Peel’s defence was quite strong but the speed and determination of McCarthy saw them run in some great tries. In recent weeks, Hollie Constable, Billie Mitchell, Millah Green, Isabella Thrupp and Melanie Young have been outstanding.
The Under 16 Boys' remain undefeated after a good win over Calrossy. The team has been boosted by the late inclusion of William Lake who also crossed for a try.
After three weeks, the Under 16 Rugby Union girls have shown that they have got what it takes. After defeats in the first week, the girls, lead by stunning performances from Jada Taylor, Safia Arranz, Daisy George and Jessica Downey, have won four of their last five games. All the girls have shown significant improvement. Well done to Chyna Pennell and Mackenzie Alderson for scoring their first tries. Improvements have been seen in the excellent defensive work by Olivia Bath and Isla O'Reilly followed by hard running by Jayde White. Points have also come through tries by Olivia Whittemore and Skyler Dowden. Well done to the girls on an excellent effort.
Both Under 14 teams have performed well and have played with enthusiasm and determination. The Under 14 Gold team played Oxley High School and had a comprehensive five tries to nil victory. It was a great all round team effort with the standout players being Miller Lloyd and Elijah Allan-Saunders. Elijah scored three tries showing great pace and Miller ran the ball strongly and tacked hard throughout the game.
I encourage the McCarthy community to come and support the boys' and girls' Rugby every Friday night. Well done to all players on an excellent effort.

Under 16s
In the first two weeks of the Friday Night Rugby Competition, the 16s found themselves pitted against a combined Quirindi/Barraba team. In both games we were successful, though the second match was a much more challenging contest with the opposition starting to build some useful combinations which forced the McCarthy lads to dig deep and grind out a win.
Our third game was against the Cowper B side which was augmented with a number of their A team, making for a tight and competitive game. McCarthy managed to wrest the game through their excellent work at the break down, starving the opposition of ball at crucial points in the game.
Our fourth game had the team facing a combined Oxley/Tamworth High squad. Again, strong control of the ruck and breakdown gave McCarthy the advantage against a bigger and more aggressive opposition. A dominant feature of the boys’ play has been their courageous defence – often against larger opposition, they have consistently cut down runners with copybook tackles. More significant tests are on the horizon as we soon face an undefeated Farrer team.
