Industry Experience Thank you
We would like to acknowledge the Local Learning and Employment Networks for their hard work in getting businesses on board to take VCAL students for Structured Work Placement. The website set up by the State Government is a wonderful resource as it helps links students with suitable positions: www.workplacements.education.vic.gov.au
We appreciate the enthusiasm of the following businesses to nurture the future employees in their industry: Hospitality - Jones Catering Pty Ltd, Building & Construction - Swell Constructions Balnarring and Bunnings Oakleigh South, Electrical - Kimmark Electrics Braeside, Disability Services - Croydon Special Development School, IT and Multimedia- Managed Services Rowville, 77 Productions Cheltenham, and Sport & Recreation; Knox Basketball Stadium.
As can be seen, our students are prepared to travel to learn about their industry through hands-on one day a week experience. Please contact Caitlin mackc@nazareth.vic.edu.au if you could host a VCAL student for one day a week at work in your business.
Joseph Centre Kitchen
Our industrial kitchen continues to be a well utilised and enjoyable space for learning life skills and practising teamwork. This week Year 12 VCAL student Tamyka took the opportunity to utilise the communication skills she has learnt through her TAFE Certificate III and IV studies, in teaching Year 10 LEAP student Nathan about the O.H. & S. hazards, risk levels and control measures when working in a hospitality environment. Certainly, their baking skills were successful if the mouth watering aromas drifting into our classrooms were anything to judge!
Students patiently wait for the Kitchen Garden's winter crop to take off so that they can cook up some warm tasty winter lunches for staff and students. Watch SIMON Morning Notices for further details.
Year 9 Chisholm DREAM Centre VETis Discovery Day - mark this on the calendar
Year 9s are looking forward to their exciting excursion on Thursday 31 May to Chisholm's DREAM Centre. The DREAM Centre wishes to showcase its facilities by giving all Year 9s a taste of learning in a TAFE environment. Students have been sent an email link to a survey about their knowledge of VETis Programs offered in Senior School. This survey also allows students to select their Top Two Preferences from workshops in: Hospitality, Engineering, Plumbing, Childcare, Automotive, Building, Hair & Beauty and Health. As there a limited numbers in each workshop, we hope to guarantee that all Year 9s who complete the online survey by Monday 14 May will be placed in one of their Top Two Preferences. Late selections will be limited in choice of workshops. Upon returning to Nazareth, students will choose a means of communicating what they learnt and the value of this experience. These responses will be displayed on the Joseph Centre windows, with those judged the best in each category receiving a prize! Details of whether students are expected to wear their full winter uniform or sports uniform will be outlined in the Permission Letter and through SIMON Morning Notices in the coming weeks. We thank Ms Gillian Raeburn and her team of staff for organising this opportunity for Nazareth students.
Environmental Club
With VCAL and LEAP students continuing efforts to beautify the College grounds through the establishment of garden beds, displays of colourful pot plants, whilst making a difference to the environment through recycling initiatives, we are calling on students from Years 7 - 12 to be part of an Environmental Club. Members will meet and allocate roles in planning, designing and building new garden beds around the school, assisting with waste recycling audits and publicity, watering and maintenance of gardens and pot plants, fundraising, and preparing proposals to use art and colour to make the grounds a more visually pleasant environment. The first meeting for interested students will be next Monday 14 May at lunchtime in the Joseph Centre. Interested students are welcome to bring their lunch and fresh ideas.
SCOPE's Southern Balloon Football League
With three rounds of competitive football completed, lat year's Premiers, the Bulldogs, lead the Season Ladder. We have had one drawn game already and two wins from the Eagles, our new team of rising stars. This week, students are looking forward to seeing Jaebin's new assistance dog, who will watch him from the sideline! A big shout out to Angelina for her assistance in field umpiring and to Cathy and Nathan for their work on the score benches. Each year, our Year 11s quickly make mention of how much the BFL players love this team sport and acknowledge the level of determination they display in games. It has been inspirational to watch players extend their physical movement of limbs and overall control of their wheelchairs and the ball. The players' strategies used to pass the ball to team mates and through the forward line to goal, or to heavily defend, are testament to their ability to problem solve and take risks. It is so heartening to assist along side regular volunteers and family members, and to advocate for inclusive activities in the community. SCOPE Victoria and Springers Leisure Centre are to be congratulated on their efforts in this regard.
