Secondly, a huge congratulations to Caitlin Williams and Emily Brennan who swam in maximum events and were awarded the U17 Girls Pennant. Such a massive achievement by these girls in the pool and they should be extremely proud of themselves; we definitely are!!
Thirdly, a huge shout out to all the staff who volunteered to help out at the Carnival and especially to Ms Amy Kane for her tireless work in the lead up to the Carnival. Her dedication and hard work is a credit to the Sport Department and Nazareth as a whole. SIS Swimming Carnival student report
The SIS swimming carnival day was held on 26 April, when Nazareth swimmers went to MSAC to participate in numerous swimming races and relays. Also, a small number of staff and students were helping and cheering for our school.
Before the competition, swimmers had undertaken four training sessions at Dandenong Oasis. Not only did the swimmers put great effort into their sessions, they had a great time working as a team to swim incredibly fast on the day. The good thing about each morning training sessions was the free breakfast.
The Carnival day is magnificent for Nazarenes and other schools. Although our school came third overall, I would like to congratulate Emily Brennan and Caitlin Williams for winning the Under 17 Girls Pennant. Moreover, I would like to congratulate Truong Le, Marko Belevski, Adrian Belevski, Caitlin Williams and Emily Brennan for representing the SIS team in the Victorian School Association's Competition on 7 May. Finally, I would like to congratulate the rest of the swimmers for participating and putting a great effort into the Carnival. Well Done Nazareth!

House Cross Country
This was the first year of Nazareth's Cross Country that saw students run a course around the College grounds. The sun was out and students were excited to get out of the classroom and participate for House points. Across all year levels we had some tremendous results and students gave it their all to finish the respective 3km and 4km courses.
It is with great pleasure that I announce the Top 10 male and female runners for each Year level. This year we rewarded the effort of our Top 3 students with prizes for their outstanding participation. 1st prize was a $20 rebel sport voucher, 2nd a $15 rebel sport voucher and 3rd place a mini sherrin.
Well done to the following:
The top 10 runners will now be invited to participate in the SIS Cross Country on the 22 May at Baxter Park. We can't wait to see what the amazing runners deliver on the day.
Final results and points:
1st McAuley 424
2nd McCormack 372
3rd Knox 369
4th Chisholm 359

Vinnies Conference Day- 3 May 2018
The St Vincent De Paul Society Conference Day was an amazing experience. I was able to share this experience with six of my fellow classmates, the most beautiful people you’ll ever meet. Students involved in Vinnies and Social Justice outreach groups from across Melbourne, gathered at the Abbotsford Convent in Collingwood to share their ideas as to what being a ‘Vincentian’ means to them. As a group, we all learnt a great deal about the amount of effort and planning that goes into making the Society work, and just how far reaching their good works extend.
After morning tea, we were split into 6 groups to listen to volunteers speak about what they do for Vinnies and the amount of preparation that takes place. One of the workshops was seeing the retail and sales side of the Vinnies op-shops. The clothes that they cannot sell are exported to poorer countries that happily accept them and items are recycled so that nothing goes to waste or landfill. One interesting fact was that their greatest need is during winter, because people hold off on clearing out cupboards until later in the year. So if anyone has old warmer clothing that they no longer need (jumpers, tracksuit pants, coats, hats, scarves etc), please bring them to our donation bins during OUR appeal so people can make use of them NOW as the weather turns colder.
Another workshop was learning about pathways you can take to still be involved in Vinnies after school. The whole day was run by 19-20 year olds who entered the St Vincent De Paul Society Youth Program, which leads them into bigger roles in the society and they gain confidence and knowledge about what Vinnies does. One volunteer spoke about the “Just Art” competition, where you draw or colour a picture that you think represents POVERTY (this year’s theme) and post it on social media or share it with your school, and the winner gets a prize.
One realisation that I gained from the day was just how many people volunteer at Vinnies and how much effort goes into the success of the organisation. We learned that it takes many people to give up a fraction of their time to make a difference in the lives of so many people who are not as lucky as we are. Seeing students from other schools, who have the same vision as me to make the world a better place, was inspiring and makes me want to keep doing what I’m doing.

Grade 5/6 STEM partnership with Resurrection Primary.
Today the Resurrection Primary school students participated in their first STEM challenge (at Nazareth College) in building a tower with just newspaper rolls and masking tape.
I thought that it was awesome to do something that high school children might do.
-Tam and Ricardo - Winners of the weight challenge
I enjoyed it a lot and learnt more about STEM.
- Catherine
Very fun and enjoyed a lot!
- Anthony
It was a great experience for the students, they were able to work collaboratively to problem solve and create unique solutions to build the tallest, strongest tower.
- Kim Baldsing (Teacher)
The STEM activity was very impressive. The students are all very sharp and switched on.
Every group came up with unique and independent design demonstrating creativity.
All in all we can see future scientists, engineers and technologists.
- Rama Rao (CSIRO STEM scientist)
It was very impressive to see the designs students developed and built! I was amazed at how strong the towers were and at the weights they could support. Well done!
- Mr Garry Giese (Deputy Principal)
A huge thanks to Maree Pennant for putting it all together.

VCE Studio Art Excursion
On Monday 30 April, VCE Studio Art students had the privilege of attending the 2018 Top Arts Exhibition. They travelled independently into Federation Square where they were given an opportunity to look through a large number of 2017 Studio Art folios. Many students were shocked and inspired by the thorough research and consistent development of art making techniques within the Unit 3 and 4 Studio Art folios.
They then viewed the entire exhibition which showed a range of art making materials as well as displaying techniques.
Following the Top Arts Exhibition Unit 3 students visited more art spaces including private galleries as well as artists run spaces and a university gallery.
The Unit 1 students were asked to explore public sculptures and not only did they find the sculptures listed for their project, they were lucky enough to see a human performing as a sculpture for the public. A lovely combination of performing art and visual art.
A big congratulation to all the Studio Art students for participating in such an inspiring and insightful excursion.

Jewish Holocaust Centre Excursion- Year 10 History
On Thursday 19 April 2018 the Year 10 History students visited the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Elsternwick.
The visit consisted of a guided tour around the museum which allowed for a deeper understanding of the horrific occurrences that made up the Holocaust, as well as a first hand recount of WW2 from a French Holocaust survivor. His life story was extremely emotional, and I believe I speak for the whole class when I say that his experience made the facts and statistics of the Holocaust seem much more real and devastating than the numbers and figures we read in our textbooks.
The whole experience was invaluable and provided each one of us with information and insight into the horrors of the Holocaust, and also greater appreciation for the strength and courage of those who endured it.
Thank you to Miss Smith for coordinating this excursion and for Mr Pieters who accompanied us on this excursion.

Year 10 Reflection Day
On Friday 27 April Year 10 students had their Reflection Day with the theme of Social Justice. Students entered into the spirit of the day through prayer, games and activities that allowed them to explore who are the poor among us. Nazareth had invited and had the benefit of the Missionaries of Charity sisters and St Vinnies workers who shared their lives and mission in life, that of following Jesus by serving the poor in our society. I invite you to pray for our Year 10 students as they ready themselves to serve the poor they come across in their lives. May God give them the courage to say yes always.
God bless,
Mr Peter Nathan
