Principal's Report

Dear Families and Friends of Nazareth College

I would like to welcome you all back to Term 2.  I, unfortunately, missed the opportunity to write to you in the last edition of the Newsletter as I was overseas.

Both David Broadbent (Assistant Principal Learning) and I were invited by Hewlett Packard and Trident to travel to Singapore and be hosted in the HP eLearning centre.  This was a tremendous opportunity for Nazareth to experience some of the latest educational innovations and see how they can further improve learning.

As at 2019, Nazareth hopes to have an upgraded operating system which will allow our community to utilise the latest and the very best.

Mobile Phone Usage

Since returning, the College has made some significant changes in monitoring the mobile phone usage at school.

In simple terms, students have been reminded that mobile phones can only be used to school, from school and NOT whilst at school.  They are not to be used between 1st Bell and the Final Bell at the end of the day.  All student phones should be locked securely in their lockers.

I thank parents and students for the manner in which they have responded to this directive.

It is so pleasing to see students interacting with each other rather than simply being engaged with their phones.

A reminder that phones that are confiscated will be returned immediately after school on the first occasion, and on subsequent occasions will only be returned to parents and students at a scheduled meeting time.

Staffing

I welcome Emilia Fields, the new Director of Global Innovation / International Programs.  Emilia is an expert in her field and comes with a wealth of experience and knowledge.

Sandra Murphy is our new Receptionist.  She also has worked in a number of schools and in the legal fraternity.

Finally, Emily Bryon has joined the Learning Support team and will assist in ensuring that our students with needs are supported.  Also, with the introduction of the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data Scheme, Emily’s administrative skills will be invaluable.

We are extremely grateful to have these people join our team.

New Language Bridging School

We are happy to announce that, in the next term, we will hopefully be in a position to launch our new English Bridging School.

This is ultimately for International students whose English language needs to improve.  Internationals will be able to enrol and attend a Bridging Program that is based on intensive acquisition of the English language prior to their full integration into mainstream schooling.

This is a fantastic initiative for our Community.  If any of you have any relatives or friends who would like to enrol or become part of our Community, please ask them to contact the Registrar (Bernadette Bryant) on (03) 9790 8100.

Sport

In concluding, I would like to congratulate the SIS Swimming representatives who swam on Monday evening at MSAC.  Each of them represented Nazareth College and the SIS (Southern Independent Schools) Association.

They were:

Adrian Belevski, Marko Belevski, Emily Brennan, Trung Le and Caitlin Williams.

I also congratulate Hamed Afashin Azar (Year 12 MacKillop 4) for achieving a Bronze Medal in the 4 x 100m medley relay at the National Championships in Sydney.

In another sport altogether, congratulations to Emily Page for being selected to go over to America and compete in the Ice Hockey championships.

God Bless

Mr Sam Cosentino
