The profile of a teacher

Over the past few weeks, our celebratory events for our Year 12 students have been a delight to attend. Our graduating class moved seamlessly through the important rituals and showed appropriate amounts of reverence, respect and good humour. One of the delightful features of these events is watching the excellent interaction between students and their teachers.

Last Friday was World Teachers’ Day. Our Parent Association provided a beautiful thank you morning tea for our staff. It may be a small gesture, but it was extremely well received by our staff who work hard to provide an environment conducive to learning.

Our Mission statement specifically alludes to the development of young people of competence, conscience, compassion, committed to God and the service of others. Those qualities can be readily extended to the profile of our teachers.

Teachers of competence understand how to engage students and facilitate learning enthusiastically. They have a sense of humour, empathy, integrity and a sense of proportion. Being open to growth and accompanying students in the learning journey are indicative of the teacher of conscience. They believe in their students and are reflective on their own practice.

A teacher of compassion is genuinely interested in the students and is committed to trying to understand them. They also challenge students to reach out for others. Commitment to God and the service of others is evident to the personal faith witness of staff and their commitment to the faith formation programs of our teachers.

Thank you to our wonderful staff. We are also very appreciative when students and families reach out and acknowledge the work of individual teachers. We are blessed to be part of a remarkable community where the efforts of students and staff are acknowledged and affirmed.
