Health and Physical Education News

Both this term and last term the Health & PE faculty have won a $3000 Sporting Schools Grant. There are two main ways that we have used this money.  In each term that we win a grant we must use part of that money to run a clinic. Last term we had SANFL run a 4-week clinic for over 200 of our students. The students learnt a lot and had loads of fun doing it. This term we have Spike Zone coming out to teach us about Volleyball, starting this Thursday (8/6). The rest of the money is used to purchase equipment to aid in our learning. Below is a photo of the equipment that we purchased last term and some of the students participating in the clinics.

Sports equipment included:-

50 cricket balls

30 volleyballs

20 indoor soccer balls

20 footys

40 reversible bibs

And 24 inflating needles

Girls SAPSASA Knockout Football

On Monday 22 April the Hackham East Girls Football Team hosted Port Elliott Primary School in a Knockout round of SAPSASA football.  The competition provided an opportunity for students to transfer knowledge from our recent focus on invasion games and practise skills from the Auskick Program funded through the ‘Sports in Schools’ grant we secured this year. With this grant we were also able to purchase new equipment including footballs, bibs, indoor soccerballs and volleyballs.

Well done to Tiana Tuapawa who demonstrated our school values of Persistence with her efforts to ruck all over the field. In recent weeks the AFL media coverage has addressed the issue of ‘sledging’ in sport and whether playing a game therefore makes it okay to behave in a way that is unkind as long as it is confined within the contest. The notion that this behaviour is okay is not consistent with what we teach our students at Hackham East Primary School. We were most impressed and proud of Tiana's ability as Captain to demonstrate concern and fairness through examples of Good Manners and Friendliness in her interactions with the visiting team during play. This was a great reflection of the Play is The Way pedagogy that the Hackham East teachers implement in their class each day.

Although outplayed on the day by a disciplined Port Elliott team, competitive second and fourth quarter efforts were rewarded with goals scored by Abria Anson, Rachael Mubake and a spectacular torpedo on the run by Latysha Jackson that would not have looked out of place if shown alongside an Eddie Betts highlight reel.

Without the ongoing support of parents and volunteers to assist with supervision, transport or umpiring we are unable to provide these sporting opportunities for students to represent our school. Thank you to Allana Nottle and Tara Salter who both volunteered their time and showed courage to assist as first time goal umpires.

Lunchtime Sports

Last term we had eight teams compete in our lunchtime basketball competition played every Thursday during lunch play time. Congratulations to the teacher representative side that collected both the minor Premiership and Grand Final victory.

This program will continue into Term 2 through teams of mixed gender playing indoor soccer every Thursday.  So far we have been able to engage the wider community thus having year 12 representatives from Cadijn College attend to help umpire games. We continue to look for ways to engage the wider community through our PE program with hopes of one day having enough student participants along with parents willing to volunteer as coaches and coordinators so that we may reintroduce an after school sports program at Hackham East Primary School.
