S A K Garden

Alba Galban- Stephanie Alexander Garden Specialist

As we look forward to Spring, we are getting the garden ready for our next crop of summer vegetables. This is the time of year where we harvest our winter vegetables. These include cauliflower, broccoli, lemons, herbs, Chinese broccoli, swede and lettuce. Our garlic is still in the ground with many more months to go until it will mature.

Our focus this term is working in a team to plant and gather seeds. Students started the term by weeding the garden and learning to identify some common herbs such as parsley, rosemary, thyme and oregano. They learned what they smell like and also their location in the garden.

Our chickens are laying approximately one egg a day, as they start up again coming into spring. The chicken pen will start looking a little bit different soon as we make it more interactive….stay tuned.

Thank you to the parents who help in the garden, students are always excited to see parents there as it usually means they get to do more difficult tasks. Our Community Garden is well on it's way with a clean up, then designing where we are going to put plants and a water feature. I have allocated 1hr every Friday morning for those who would like to join our group. This is a great way to contribute to the Kingswood community and healthy for the mind.

I would like to invite parents, grandparents and friends to be part of a new project at the back of Unit K. This area will only be accessible to students with teachers, but accessible to volunteers at any time. This is a community area so your input is important. Meetings and work is scheduled for Friday morning. No garden experience is necessary as you will learn along the way, this is a great way to de-stress and meet new people. Children are welcome, but need to be supervised by a guardian. Our green house is now in place and a nice new concreted area is all done. The next Community Garden day will be Friday 17th of August; I can supply gloves.
