CHESS is a classic game of strategy, invented more than 1500 years ago in India.

Legend has it that the ruler of India asked his officials to devise a way to teach the members of his royal family to become better thinkers and better generals on the battlefield.

Across the world, chess ranks significantly higher than any other game or sport for attributes such as intelligence, sophistication, strategy, perfection and complexity.

Just recently, Australian of the Year, Professor Michelle Simmons credited chess with helping her to stay focused, push boundaries and become a quantum physicist.

The game today is played by hundreds of millions around the world and is being introduced into many schools as a way of improving student performance. It is part of the curricula in nearly 30 countries.

STEM

This year, Palm Beach School has introduced a STEM program into its curriculum. S.T.E.M stands for  Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The aim of STEM is to incorporate these four disciplines during predominantly hands-on activities. STEM will be initially taught to grades 2, 3 and 4.

During STEM classes, the students will often construct a product (engineering). During the building phase, science knowledge may be adopted or used to explain the end result. Technology may be incorporated to help design or complete the product. Mathematical concepts are referred to as the need arises.

I am excited to take on the new role of STEM teacher at our school. Not only are the children going to create some great work, but they are going to have great fun as well. Just as importantly, they are going to learn important thinking and group work skills.

Look out for extra updates regarding our STEM program.
