Level Low Downs

Prep

We have had a great first week of Term 2 in Prep. It has been lovely to see the smiling faces of all the Prep Students as they returned to the classroom to explore some new learning areas throughout the Prep Learning Space. The teachers and students thoroughly enjoyed hearing about everyone’s holiday adventures.

During our GEM (grateful, mindful and empathy) lesson this week we explored what it means to be grateful and discussed the different things we are grateful for. Below are some are the things the students in Prep are grateful for:

Ava (Prep L) “ I am grateful for the teachers because they help me learn.”

River (Prep L) “I am grateful for my baby sister being born.”

Charlotte (Prep H) “I am grateful for the people in my family for loving me.”

Evie (Prep H) “I am grateful for my Mum because she cooks me dinner.”

Bella (Prep M) “I am grateful for my house because it is nice and warm when it is raining.” Olivia (Prep M) “I am grateful for my friends because they make me happy.”

Oliver (Prep S) “I am grateful for my dog who sleeps with me every night to keep me company.”

Ari (Prep S) “I am grateful for my brother because he plays with me.”

Year One

The Year 1 students have hit the floor running. We can’t wait for our incursion that is happening on Tuesday next week. Mrs Sargood (from the 1880s), will be making history happen in the classroom. She was a mother of 10 children and managed 35 servants so even the teachers can’t wait to learn from her. We have been exploring 'chance' in Maths and decided that it was impossible for us to ride a giraffe to school tomorrow but it was certain that someone would give us a meal. In English we have been setting goals and we are excited to do our personal best whether it is having the correct pencil grip or writing using powerful words like ‘juicy’.

Year Two

Each week Year 2 classes have a library session when students are given the opportunity to borrow a book to take home and select new books for their Book Boxes. Library bags are strongly encouraged. Students are guided by teachers and the librarian to select ‘just right books’ for them. Within class we discuss and remind students of the importance of books that are ‘just right’ – interesting and purposeful to them, able to read most words and understand the content.

Class teachers are able to assist those children wishing to search for books from the 2021 Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge list. The Challenge list provides a broad range of books from which the children can choose appropriate reading material for their individual challenge. Books are added to the list regularly by an expert panel which includes teachers and librarians. We strongly encourage the participation of Year 2 children in the Reading Challenge. Passwords will be pasted into the front of their reading journal.

Year Three

What a great start to Term 2 we have had in Year 3. We have started our History Inquiry unit and are looking forward to finding out more about Australia. We are working on our addition skills through dice and card games, creating sizzling starts for our narrative writing and using the iPads in the classroom for coding, spelling and reading. We are looking forward to a wonderful term of learning!

Year Four

The Year 4’s have hit the ground running. Term 2 has started with a great inquisitive introduction into our inquiry subject focus Geography. The students have been exploring the world through maps and recognising Australian landmarks. We have also investigated various countries’ currency, custom stamps and passports. Needless to say, the Year 4 students are very eager to delve into their Inquiry Project and explore all the world has to offer.

Year Five

We have had a very exciting start to Term 2. We have begun to immerse ourselves into our new inquiry unit, Civics and Citizenship. This week we have Tim Wilson, from our local council coming to speak to us and next week we have our Parliament Processes incursion.

What we are most excited about for Term 2 in Year 5?

Gabe – Our new inquiry unit of Civics and Citizenship

Elicia – Playing outside with my friends and Year 1 buddy

Eden – Being an upstander

Kiera – All of the Incursions we have coming up!

Josh – Cross Country

Macey – Interschool sport. I am playing sport at school, so I am excited about being able to participate in all the winter sports.

Year Six

The Year 6’s have settled back into school well after a relaxing holidays. They have now received their scripts for this year's musical, Moana, and are very excited to start rehearsals.
