How to know if your child is ready for a smart phone.
The idea of buying your child a smartphone can be daunting but teaching your kids responsible phone usage can help keep them safe.
One-third of Australian children aged six to 13 own a smartphone, and your child might be asking when they can get one too. The truth is, there is no set age on when a child should get their first phone. Despite most young people in Australia receiving their first smartphone between the ages of 12 to 13, it all boils down to maturity and needs.
When can I tell if my child is ready for a smartphone?
If your child is becoming independent, a smartphone might be a good tool to help keep in touch. Smartphones may come in handy if your children travel to and from school alone or do after-school activities. But before deciding, try asking yourself the following questions and if you can’t answer with a resounding ‘yes’ to all, it may not be time to get that phone just yet.
- Will your child have enough self-control to follow screen time rules?
- Has your child developed the responsibility needed to care for their own belongings?
- Do you feel that your child understands mobile technology?
- Does your child have adequate information about the risks they may encounter when using a phone?
- Do they have the skills to keep themselves safe when encountering these risks?
- Are you confident that your child can follow school rules regarding the use of phones?
- Does your child have a clear understanding of what behaviours are okay (and not okay) online?
Finally, it may be worth speaking to other parents about their child’s phone use. Having these conversations may help you understand what is normal amongst their cohort.
