Intermediate Soccer

On Tuesday the 30th of May, Beaufort Secondary College competed in the Eureka Intermediate Soccer at Wendouree West Reserve.

Our boys' team played three matches, really growing into the day, despite suffering a heavy loss first up. This was followed by a narrow defeat, before finishing off with a triumphant win.

In game one, Noah Scofield put a tremendous performance in as goalkeeper, nearly holding Ballarat High School at bay in the first half, until they scored two just before the stroke of half time. Tristan Drinkwater was very solid down back, winning many a contested ball, while Liam Sage and Billy Welsh, Year 8's who stepped up into the intermediate team, were very industrious in midfield, running hard, sliding into tackles, and passing well to teammates. Ultimately, Ballarat High School, who were eventual finalists, were too strong, scoring a few more goals in the second half.

In game two, against a tough Mount Clear College side, who also went on to make the final, Beaufort Secondary College fought bravely and should be very proud of their performance. Jet Kerr was a colossus in defence, ably assisted by Zac Spicer, Beau Humber and Nic Stares, managing to hold out Mount Clear for most of the match with long clearing kicks. Zac Bickerton made himself a nuisance on the wing, terrorising the opposition's defences with his zig-zagging runs. Beaufort did have a few expeditions into their opponents’ box but could not create any clear-cut chances. Noah Scofield made many spectacular saves, keeping Beaufort in the match. Mount Clear managed to break our heart by scoring with the last kick of the match, to see them win one-nil.

In their final game, Beaufort Secondary College came up against Phoenix P-12 Community College, who were also yet to win a match. Beaufort were excellent early, dominating in  the midfield. Javiar Drinkwater was everywhere, even taking every throw in, while Aris Damalas dribbled past players and distributed the ball well. Josh Fraser was dangerous up forward, getting in good positions but narrowly missing two gilt-edged chances, with one curling effort hitting the post. Best and Fairest, Noah Scofield, put in a mature performance in the second half, screening the defence and holding midfield, mopping up any loose balls. On one of the numerous occasions Noah won the ball, he passed off to Rylee Jacka, who had run tirelessly all day. Rylee took off from just in front of the halfway line with the ball, going on a mazy run, bounding down the field. It looked like he had bitten off more than he could chew, when two defenders went to close him down on the edge of the 18-yard box, however Rylee deftly passed the ball off to Ben Grant, who controlled the ball well and shot it, arrow-like, past the keeper to score. Ben Grant could not be stopped as he charged off to the corner flag doing the Cristiano Ronaldo ‘Siuuu’ celebration as everyone around celebrated. Jet Kerr and Cal Mahoney were strong in defence, helping Beaufort hold on for the win and cap off a successful day on the field.
