Year 8 Tennis, Regional Finals – Thursday April 27th.

On Thursday the 27th of April our Year 8 Tennis Team competed at the Regional Finals, which was held at Oak Tennis Club. Our MGC Team consisted of Maia Gurov, Claudia Popovic, Ines Cooper. Unfortunately, Kristina Bratkova was away for the day, but thankfully Sofia Arevalo Diaz stepped up to help the Year 8 Team.

The weather was not on our side, with scattered showers and strong winds. This was perceived a considerable challenge for all participants. However, our Year 8s adapted to the conditions and rose to the challenge. We won the first 2 rounds, both in double and singles. Everyone played extremely well, showing great depth, and moving their opponents around the court. This resulted with MGC winning our Pool, making it through to the final against Gladstone Park.

The Final was very competitive and both teams displayed a fantastic level of skill. But once again, our Year 8s adapted to the conditions and utilised their strengths. Maia played an incredible defensive game; Ines controlled the match with her serve, Claudia took risks and utilised her power and Sofia continued to run down every ball. The games were close, and it came done to the last doubles to determine the winner. Ines finalised the scores finishing the final play with another strong serve. The final score consisted of 4 – 2 games with Gladstone Park winning 1 single and 1 double. While our Year 8s took away the win, winning 3 singles and 1 double, qualifying for the State Championships.

State Swimming Championships – Friday April 28th

On Friday the 28th of April the State Swimming Championships were held at MSAC, we had 24 MGC students compete on the day, consisting of 4 individual events and 6 relays. It was a fantastic day, and our students swam incredibly well, with Lucinda Goudie placing 4th in the Under 13, 50m Breaststroke, Alexis McCarthy, placed 8th (31.94) in Under 14, 50m freestyle and Allegra Di Domenico placed 4th (30.04) in the Under 13, 50m freestyle. Well done to everyone on their outstanding performances. Chloe Millard won the Under 18-20, 50m butterfly. Chloe’s swim was seamless, producing an outstanding time of 30.23. Additionally, Zeina Abbass placed 2nd in the Under 14, 50m backstroke. Zeina swam incredibly well, producing an amazing time of 33.31.

Our relays teams were strong across the board, with our under 12-14 medley relay team placing 4th with a time of 2:22:33, our under 15-16 Medley Relay placed 6th with a time of 2:26:84. Our 12-13 freestyle relay team placed 4th with a time 2:16:08 and our under 14 Freestyle relay team placed 5th with a time of 2:10:48.

Additionally, our under 17-20 Medley relay team won the 200m Medley with an incredible time of 2:15:51. This included Chloe Millard, Charli Campbell, Manon Shaw and Mahalia De Krester. Furthermore, our Under 15 Freestyle relay team, won the 200m Freestyle Relay with an amazing time of 2:09:07. This included Lucy Crouch, Alyssa Blair, Amelie Szoeke and Zeina Abbass. As a result of our outstanding Swimming Team and their amazing performances, MGC placed 8th overall in the State.

Senior Netball

Our Senior Netball Players had a fabulous day last  Thursday- a wonderful group of students represented MGC in our senior netball first round. With not having won this round for the past four or five years, our senior netballers played brilliantly to beat SEDA (for the first time) in the final and go on to the regionals in July.

Thank you to the Year 12 students who gave up their studies and competed before their English SAC -  Very stressful…
