We are learning to make inferences about a character's ulterior motives. 


VOCABULARY

Inference: The process of drawing a conclusion based on the available evidence plus previous knowledge and experience.

Traits: Different features of a character, including their appearance.

Motivations: The reason why a character is doing something.

Ulterior motive: The hidden reason why a character is doing something.


ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

When reading a fiction text with your child, ask them what the character’s traits are. Get them to justify it with evidence from the text. Ask your child about the motivations behind some of their actions. Get them to justify it with evidence from the text. Ask your child about the ulterior motives behind some of the characters’ actions. Get them to justify it with evidence from the text.
