I would like to thank the Monty community for giving me such a warm welcome to your wonderful school. I am in my second week and have already met a large number of students, staff and families and it is easy to see why Monty has such a fantastic reputation in the education community. Please introduce yourself if I see you around the school as I look forward to getting to know everyone. Personally, I have been a principal for 17 years at three different schools and am enjoying the opportunity to lead at Monty for a term and a half. It is a great school of which you should all be very proud.

Last Friday, the staff used the Curriculum Day to complete Community Understanding and Safety Training. This training is a key commitment in the Marrung Aboriginal Education Plan, Victoria’s ten-year plan to support improved outcomes for Koorie learners across early childhood, schools, skills and training and higher education. The purpose of the training is to increase understanding of Koorie culture, history and experience, to ensure a strong foundation for culturally inclusive practices. It was a very worthwhile day with staff fully engaged in the training and gaining very worthwhile and useful information.

It is great to see the progress on the new building going so well with not too many wet days assisting with the construction. I attended my first site meeting last week and it was pleasing to see everyone working together as a team to create this amazing space for Monty Primary School. I am sure you are watching the progress with great excitement and anticipation for completion near the end of 2023. Please see the 'Building Update' section below for further details.

We were disappointed to have to postpone the Movie Night with limited ticket sales, poor weather forecast, the soft state of the oval and quite a large number of illnesses currently in the school community. Save the new date in your diary - Friday, 25th August - for the rescheduled Movie Night and we look forward to a fun and successful school community evening.

The Production for 2023 is beginning to ramp up with main cast auditions starting and planning for dances across the school well underway. The production will be performed on Wednesday the 6th and Thursday the 7th of September at Eltham High School. The majority of students will be split into two performance groups, but the main cast will perform at both shows. Keep a lookout through Compass for regular updates about performance groups and times, ticket sales, costumes, etc. as the production gets closer.

Ross Davis,

Acting Principal

Building Update

If you haven't recently had a look at where the building project is up to at drop off or pick up, a visit will be well worth your time - there has been a LOT of movement with our build. The steel frame has now been completely erected, the decking posts have been concreted in and work has begun on the joists. Over the next fortnight, further brickwork and some service rough ins are due to be completed - keep an eye out for all these exciting developments!

The artist impression image below is now, hopefully, easier to put into context. This image is from the perspective of someone standing on the basketball court. The trees and shadow children to the left-hand side of the building shows the location of the Zone 1 playground and the far side of the building is where it meets the Rattray Road boundary of the school.

Alban Street Safety

We have noticed (and have been contacted by multiple people) that the use of Alban Street by motorists, particularly in the afternoon pick up period, has been very concerning. We urge all of families to obey the street signs displayed, in both the morning drop off and afternoon pick up periods.

Due to the importance we place on the safety of the MPS community and our local residents, the council has been contacted about these concerns. They came for an afternoon visit during the week and have been encouraged by the school to continue this practice in the future.

School Illnesses

Now that we have entered winter, like the general community, we, too, are experiencing a high volume of illness in our school. Several teachers and students are currently unwell. As a result, we ask for your understanding as classes may be split across other classes or have casual relief teachers over the coming week/s. If your child displays symptoms of being unwell, please keep them home until the symptoms resolve.
