Level Low Downs

Prep

This term the Preps have been learning about different communities and the different places that can be used. Today we went for a walk to the Beaumaris Library where we were joined by a local librarian who read us many stories and sang us some songs. We also got to play on the public playground and run around the oval. We are very lucky to be a part of such a wonderful Beaumaris Community!

Year 1

The Year 1 students have enjoyed working with their friends in the classroom this week. We are learning to remember to use our manners and to speak kindly to each other at all times.

Year 2

Despite the excitement of a waterfall in Ms Foster’s classroom, we have continued with the momentum of the previous fortnight. In Maths, we are regrouping in addition using games, hands-on materials and scaffolded instruction. In Literacy, we have started implementing Universal Design for Learning ideas to help make learning inclusive and transformative for all our students. Our ‘Sizzling Start’ Lessons were planned to stimulate interest and motivation. Content for ‘Sizzling Starts’ was presented at different tables with options such as videos and books. Students could express their learning several ways including drama, writing and drawing.

Yar 3

Here are some updates from the Year 3 specialist classes this week.

In Art, the students have been practising drawing nature. The focus has been to sketch what they see and not what they already know.

In Performing Arts, the students have been learning dances from all over the world. They have also been working on retelling Indigenous stories through dance by acting as Australian animals.

In Japanese, students are continuing to learn the Hiragana alphabet. They are practising reading books in Hiragana and progressing through different levels.

Specialist classes are a clear highlight of their week!

Year 4

On Thursday 1st of June, the Year 4 students went to Werribee Zoo to learn about African animals and their habitats. They participated in a ‘predator prey’ workshop and got to explore the zoo. The highlight, though, was the safari ride through the African savannah.

Year 5

Biodiversity Action Team

The Biodiversity team is in full swing taking action on their sustainability projects on a Friday afternoon. Students have been collecting fallen leaves from around the school to use as mulch on our kitchen garden and trimming trees in the orchard. The Biodiversity team also do chop'n'chat every Friday, where they collect compost bins from classrooms around the school and prepare the food for the compost bin. Garden Club is starting up this week on Wednesdays at lunch time. All students are welcome to join garden club, make sure you look for Year 5 leaders in the green vests.

Upstanders

The Year 5 Upstanders have been another busy group at BPS. The Upstanders have been coordinating a lunchtime club of outdoor games on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays outside the Pavilion. All students are welcome to join the lunchtime club, look out for the orange PLAY leaders vests. Last week the Upstanders visited the Prep and Year 1 classes to share what happens at the lunchtime club and why it is fun to join. The Upstanders also organised the location of our new buddy benches. They chose outside the Pavilion as a good spot. The buddy bench is a great place to sit if you can not find someone to play with and if you find someone sitting on the buddy bench you can ask them if they would like to play with you.

Maths

In maths this week we have been focusing on mapping, coordinates and directional language. We have been creating instructions using directional language for our partner to follow around the school and finished our lesson with a game of battleship.

Year 6

This week our Dolphin Research Ambassadors participated in their Peer Teaching Day at Sandy East Primary where they worked with students from other schools. They learned how to present a workshop to classes back at BPS, teaching them about how we can look after our marine environment and prevent rubbish from making it into our waterways. They had lots of fun working collaboratively with the other students and presenting the workshop to the Year 1s.

This morning a group of year 5 students participated in a yoga and relaxation session with Vic Crombie from Sanctuary Yoga.

The students enjoyed trying a variety of yoga poses, individually and with a partner, and especially enjoyed relaxing to the sound bowls. We are looking forward to doing it again next Friday.
