Social Work Summary & a Big Goodbye to Shayla

Last week, we bid farewell to Shayla, our social work student from La Trobe University, who has been with us since August and done some great work supporting our students throughout her placement with us. We wish Shayla all the best with her future as a social worker. Below, Shayla has left a message for our Sunny Heights Community too!

Hello families, students and staff of Sunshine Heights Primary School,

During my time at SHPS, I conducted both online and onsite sessions with students on social and emotional learning. My experience as a social worker in a school has taught how I can have an impact on other’s lives, small or big, to create positive growth and development. Also, building on the knowledge and different strategies to encourage the students to build resilience and confidence to change rather than trying to solve their problems. Finally, I am so grateful for all the reassuring words from everyone. I began my placement towards the of the end of term 3 on August 23rd, and will be completing this upcoming Wednesday, the 8th of December. I was guided by Francine who was an awesome task manager who really cared and supported my learning throughout the process. Also, I have met many amazing teachers and staff who showed me their sincere love for their students and have helped me grow my skills in interacting with the students by providing me with such great advice and encouragement. I really enjoyed my time here and I feel like I have learnt a lot in what it takes to become a supportive and helpful social worker.

Thanks SHPS for having me!

Shayla Huynh.

Know Yourself, Show Yourself, Grow Yourself Mental Health Festival 2022

You may have read the exciting news in a previous email about us receiving a grant from Brimbank City Council to run a mental health festival for the community of Sunshine!

We might be wrapping up for the year, but the planning and excitement around this initiative most certainly is not wrapping up! In fact, we have been rumbling with so many exciting people and ideas as we begin to build the program. More details around what will be on offer will be available at the beginning of our school year, but for now, please put these dates in your diary - Monday 21st March to Friday 25th March 2022.

From Monday to Thursday, we will offer a full, diverse program of events, activities, workshops and speakers open to the wider community as well as our school community and the community of Sunshine College. The festival will be co-created by Grade 6 students from our school and Year 7 students from Sunshine College, as well as with the community through a social and cultural community advisory committee.

The festival will culminate in a Street Party on the Friday 25th March with performers, community service stalls, market stalls, food trucks and more! The street party will run from 4-8:30PM.

We want to raise awareness and normalise conversations about mental health in our community, provide access and information on much needed community services, promote diversity and inclusion and create belonging to community! We also want to ensure our community know what services are available and how they can connect into services!

A final goodbye and happy festivus!

From me to you,

With love.
