Robotics Club

During Robotics Club, we have been learning about programming Lego robots to complete tasks for the upcoming robotics competition, FIRST Lego League Challenge. Due to COVID-19, our competition has been postponed to 27 April 2022 and will be held in Swinburne University Burwood campus.

The aim of the competition is to educate students about the basics of programming and building robots using LEGO. Using fun and competition as incentives, FIRST hopes to inspire students to pursue a career in STEAM.

As a side project, a small group of students (led by Mia Cramond) have been experimenting with different daily objects to see if there is a relationship between everyday life and programming. An idea we had was to figure out if we could get random objects (such as bananas) to be used as controllers for games. When the device is connected to a laptop, the bananas act like a game pad which allows us to use the bananas as a controller. And what better game to test our invention on than the classic, Donkey Kong. The full project took us about an hour and a half to complete and was overall a fun experience for everyone involved.

Here's a video of the game: Donkey Kong with bananas.

If you are interested in fun projects like this, The Robotics Club is on Thursday’s lunch time and is located at the STEAM Connect Centre!
