Student leadership

Remembrance day

MGSC students participated in the Beaumaris RSL Community Remembrance day service on Thursday 11 November.  Detta Gordon (Assistant Principal) accompanied Zali Connell (year 8), Cerin Luke (year 7), Mahdis Soroush (year 8) and Candi Prior (Middle School captain, year 10) to the Beaumaris cenotaph. The students lay a wreath on behalf of the school community.

With reduced opportunities for the school body to gather together and exams in progress on campus, we were grateful that MGSC was invited to be represented.

Application and appointments

All applications for the first round of positions have now closed for College Captains, Team Captains and membership of each of the six teams – STEAM, Performing Arts, SRC, Student Voice, Environment & Sustainability and House.

Thank you to all students who have made the decision to be part of what can be in 2022 at MGSC. The process of working through applications shortlisting and interviews will take place over the next few weeks with all students being notified as soon as possible of interview time and then outcomes. There may be further round of applications where there may be vacancies.

Current year 7 students will also have a further opportunity during Headstart to nominate to be their Class Captain. This will involve making a speech to their class only and then a vote via a google form. Class Captains from year 7 and 8 become the Junior School leadership team for 2022.

Debating

There was a first gathering this week to gauge interest for establishing a regular program for developing debating skills. There are a number of interschool debating opportunities that MGSC has participated including the MUNA competitions (Model United Nations Assembly).

There will be another get together before the end of the year and students from all year levels are encouraged to attend to find out more about what is involved.

Debating is an invaluable skill for students:

  • it promotes confidence and effective public presentation
  • it encourages logical and critical thinking, social awareness and an interest in current affairs
  • it is multi-disciplinary: debating techniques can be used in all subject areas. Its benefits extend through all aspects of the school curriculum
  • it develops the “critical and creative thinking”

Next meeting will be: Wednesday 1 December in room 6/7
