Body confident teens seminar

A free Butterfly Foundation presentation facilitated by Nicki Isaacs

With a focus on prevention, this sessions provides information and practical tips to help parents better understand and promote positive body image in the home. This session is being offered as part of Butterfly's Body Kind Families initiative proudly supported by the nib foundation. By registering you will automatically receive access to free Body Kind Families resources.

 

When: Monday 22 November 

Time: 7pm - 8.15pm (AEST)

Format:  Live Virtual Presentation using Zoom 5.0 (no recording available) 

 

Suitable for: Carers of primary and secondary age children.  Please note this session is not designed for children to attend or for those caring for someone with an eating disorder. You will explore:

  • Overview of body image and the importance of prevention
  • Key influences on body image, including social media
  • The impact of diet culture and weight stigma
  • Reducing appearance talk and how to respond when a child expresses negativity towards themselves/others
  • The power of role modelling positive body image and healthy behaviours
  • Understanding warning signs and the importance of early intervention
  • What to do if you are concerned.

ReachOut - Dealing with disturbing content 

Advice for parents 

Disturbing or controversial content can be hard to get away from for teenagers – whether it’s filling up their social feed, or the latest TV show everybody at school is talking about. But remember that this sort of media can be stressful and inappropriate, even if your teenager doesn’t think so. Here are some tips for supporting your teen through the minefield that is online content. Reachout.com has provided parents with helpful tips that may help your teenagers to deal with disturbing or difficult content in media. 

This can help if:

  • you've heard about a tv show or movie that makes you a bit uncomfortable
  • you're teenager has watched something disturbing already
