Audrey Cherry | Year Seven

At assembly this week we presented certificates to students who achieved a Distinction or High Distinction in the ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments Standards) tests. These tests, in English, Maths and Science, are aimed at high achieving students and are quite demanding. Students who achieved a Distinction were in the top 10% of students across Australia while one student, Audrey Cherry - Year Seven, received a High Distinction for English, which places her in the top 1% in Australia. Congratulations to all students.

Orientation Day

On Friday we welcome new students to the Middle School for Orientation Day. Around 80 students will spend the day at school receiving information about next year. Students will speak with teachers and take part in classes including Music, Sport, Agriculture, and Japanese. This year boarding students will be able to spend a night in the boarding house to experience a day as a boarder. The Year Nines will take students on an extended tour of the school and the contemporary Music class will perform at lunchtime. It is always an exciting day.

Cattle Club at the Albany Agricultural Show

Last week six students left Great Southern Grammar with Mr Gugenheim to show cattle at the Albany Agricultural Show. We have been preparing for the last few months and have spent around 100 hours this year getting “show ready.” On Thursday, we made it to the show grounds, washed and groomed the cattle and got everything ready for the weekend to come.

On Friday we showed up at 7.00am to start walking the cows. On Saturday we did junior judging and had to get packed up to go back to school.

Everyone did a good job walking their animals. Each animal won an award, but the main awards that GSG won were:

  • Ronald: Junior Champion bull
  • QuiQui: Senior Reserve female champion

We also competed in junior judging over the two days. Matt Edwards got into the top three for sheep. Maddy O’Neill got into the top 10 for beef judging. Over the course of the day we also participated in dairy judging.
