From the Deputy Principal

The real rewards

There are some great stories in this week's Anchor about the success of our students at the Albany Show in areas as diverse as junior judging and gingerbread houses.  But, for me, there was so much more going on at the Show than winning prizes.  What I saw, and loved, was interaction between our senior students and some of Albany's youngest children whilst the little people had their faces painted at the GSG stall.  I watched, delighted, as our Hospitality students took time to explain to a fascinated, older gentleman what both 'complimentary' (aka free) and 'affogato' meant.  He was obviously impressed as he came back for seconds!  I stood back and enjoyed the spectacle of the Pipe Band as they marched into the parade ground, preceded by a paparazzi of proud parents and followed by their own fan club of small onlookers marching proudly behind.  Our Agriculture students showed their skills with maturity beyond their years and reaped the benefits of their many hours of preparation.

All these connections to authentic opportunities build more skills and abilities in our children than we realise.  A sense of pride in their achievements, an understanding they can have a positive influence on others, respect for differences of understanding and opinion, integrity in making and keeping commitments; the list goes on and on.  It is these moments that I believe are really where the rewards are for our students.
