Orientation Day

Friday 19 November was a wonderful day here at GSG, as we welcomed our incoming 2022 Junior and Middle School students. Though some of the children may have been a little nervous, they were put at ease very quickly by their soon to be fellow students. Generous Year Eleven students volunteered for the afternoon in boarding, meeting and greeting boarders, as well as helping Heads of Boarding House. A new initiative was our boarders orientation which included an overnight stay. We also had our Year Nine leaders share their joy of our school with the incoming Middle School students.

Due to increase demand an extra Year Eight class has been added to the 2022 timetable, whilst in the Junior School we have new students starting in all Junior years. This is a testament to our school's ongoing positive reputation. Upon leaving, smiles on the faces of the new students reflected the welcome they felt.

End of Year events

By now you would have received an invitation to Award Ceremonies, we look forward to celebrating the 2021 year and the achievements of the students.

GSG National Winners - McCormick Foods Flavour Forecast Recipe Challenge

We are excited to announce that the Year Ten Hospitality class has won the WA State and National Prize in the 2021 Flavour Forecast Recipe Challenge. Each year, the challenge is supported by McCormick Foods who identifies and reports on flavour trends that are expected to drive global innovation in food. Students worked hard on four flavour trends:

  • Humble Nosh – using pandan as the hero of a street food dish to nibble on
  • Plants Pushing Boundaries – pushing fruits, vegetables, and botanicals beyond their healthy halo
  • Underwater, Under discovered – bringing flavours from the coast to the kitchen
  • Physiological Eating – mindful eating using intentional ingredients to achieve mind-body balance.  They delivered amazing dishes that impressed the judging team - the flavours, techniques, and reflections were of a very high standard.

The winning teams and their dishes were:

  • Humble Nosh: Tennille Ryde, Brianna Harris and Jocelyn Meade designed and produced Fried pandan kaya turons
  • Plants Pushing Boundaries: Max Sounness, Adelaide Boetel and Luke Harvey designed and produced ube gnocchi with charred zhug and crispy fried noodles
  • Underwater, Under discovered: Georgia Patterson, Jorja Moore, Chenae Wreford and Zoe Diletti designed and produced a charcuterie board including three elements – 1. Seaweed crackers and samphire pickle served with smoked ham and mature cheddar, 2. Barramundi ceviche, and 3. Seaweed cheesecakes with  blueberry and seaweed jam served with salted caramel.
  • Physiological Eating:  Maddie Byrne, Estella Trahair, Grace McPharlin, and Lily Parker-Halstead designed and produced spicy chicken wings with lime salt, and feel good sorbet.

Hospitality teacher, Mrs Teresa McAllister, said “I was so proud and excited for my Year Ten students to be announced the national winners of this recipe challenge. They worked incredibly hard to design, trial, produce, and evaluate recipes to meet the Flavour Forecast design briefs. They all showed creativity, used new and local ingredients, and worked cohesively as a team. I congratulate every one of them!”
