Brigidine Day

Although the community was still in lockdown at the end of Term 3, students and staff were all able to come together in celebration of Brigidine Day, although it was online. It was filled with moments to reflect, be grateful, congratulate peers and have a whole lot of fun!

Each Brigidine Day commences with Mass at which all gather together in prayer to celebrate our Catholic identity and Brigidine tradition. It is tradition that, following the Mass, the College Co-Captains are announced for the following year and the annual Brigid Awards are presented. These peer nominated awards recognise two students in each year level who model the College values each day, act with Strength and Kindliness and are wonderful contributors to the College.  Congratulations to all the students on receiving these awards and to Francesca Malignaggi and Alice Merchant for being elected the College Co-Captains for 2022. After this more formal part of the day concluded there was a range of light hearted and fun activities for all to enjoy!

The fun began with a Year Level Trivia Challenge along with best costume awards. Activities didn’t stop there as the next hour provided many options to choose from that highlighted the talents of students, staff (and their pets) via the Talent Show, Baking Challenge, Bingo Blitz, Pet Show and Zumba! Finally, all came together again for the annual Lip-Sync Battle before logging off to walk 5 km to further raise awareness for refugees and asylum seekers.

Brigidine Day is also a time when the College raises funds for a marginalised and/or vulnerable group in our community.  This year funds were raised for the Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project (BASP) which is one of our Kildare Ministries community works.  In the lead up to Brigidine Day, the College embarked on a ‘Go the Distance for Refugees’ Strava Challenge which encouraged the students to seek sponsorship as they walked around 96 km - the distance of an asylum seeker’s journey from Afghanistan to the Turkish Village of Sariciman or 474 km, which is the treacherous journey from Jonglei, South Sudan to Kenya's Kakuma Refugee Camp. The fundraising goal was $10,000 and Kilbreda College successfully raised over $10,200!
