Grade 3 Long Day Excursion
On Wednesday of this week, our Grade 3 boys participated in a long day excursion. After leaving at 9.00 am, our first stop was Huonville, where we had a lovely play in the park on the Esplanade.
Next up, we had a long bus trip down to the Tahune Airwalk, looking out at the dense forest, with mist and rain adding to the eerie atmosphere. On arrival at the Airwalk the weather cleared, and we enjoyed walking the Airwalk, accompanied by our guide Shea who explained the various trees we could see, how the fire that was started by a lightning strike on Pear Hill decimated the area, and pointed out the new growth that was evident in the area. Every boy walked out on the cantilever bridge which was a very significant achievement.
Back at the picnic area we enjoyed healthy wraps and a delicious ice cream. After lunch, Jake our Outdoor Ed Assistant from our Senior Campus led us around the Huon Pine Tree walk. The boys enjoyed guessing and matching all of the various tree species, from Huon Pine to Celery Top Pine, Blackwood, Sassafras and many more. The boys loved being in the fresh air and listening to and seeing nature at its best. On our return walk we saw a school group who had just finished a rafting trip down the Huon River. They said it was an exciting and amazing adventure. Perhaps when the Grade 3s are older they may also get to experience such an adventure!
After a quick, but yummy afternoon tea of Mr Shanny’s delicious brownies the boys headed off on the bus home. The prediction of many of them falling asleep didn’t eventuate, instead happily singing and chatting on their journey home. Thank you to the staff who organised and accompanied the boys on their excursion, including Miss Reardon, Mrs Chambers, Mrs Tollard, Mrs McClennan, Mr Terhell and Mr Ditton.
Remembrance Day
We gathered in prayer at 8.45 am to remember those who have died or suffered in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. This year marks 103 years since the signing of peace to end the Great War. Our service also commemorated the 80th Anniversary of those who served in Greece and Crete, and the 80th Anniversary of the opening of the Australian War Memorial. Clement McKenna, Joseph Shanny, George Fulton, Cody Tomes-Park, Lachlan Carlisle and Jack Kearney led the commemorative service and all our Junior Schools participated and reflected with respect.
At 11.00 am we all stopped in silence, whether it was in the classroom or on the playground, as a further sign of respect. We listened to the Last Post, remained still for a minute’s silence, listened to Rouse - which is used to call the soldiers to duty. We then resumed our work and our play, giving thanks that we live in a relatively safe and peaceful country.
FIRST LEGO League Rookie Year a Success for Junior School Teams
FIRST LEGO League Hobart Regional was held recently at our senior campus. The Junior School had two teams participating in this their first year of FIRST LEGO League. The challenge gives students aged 9 to 16 the chance to develop, design, build, and code LEGO robots to perform autonomous missions on a themed playing field and design innovative solutions to a real-world problem inspired this year by the Cargo Connect theme.
Charlie Booth, Jack Lemm, Henry Ellston, Angus Mulder, Hamish Bewley and Qataiba El Saouda represented SVC in the Grade 4 team, and Cody Tomes-Park, Owen Thristan, George Fulton, Hamish McGuire, Andrew Mooney and Jason Tang comprised the Grade 5&6 team.
Since the season launch in August, boys have committed to meeting weekly in their recess or lunch times to master coding skills in the robot game and to develop the presentation of their innovation projects to a panel of judges. Grade 4 designed a Lockdown Buddy to deliver fast food at home during a COVID lockdown and Grade 5&6 developed a Drone Drop for delivering small packages to neighbourhoods using solar charged drones working from local pods.
The friendly competition on the day between the sixteen teams was fast and furious and after three rounds of the robot game the Grade 4 team were placed 10th and the Grade 5&6 team placed 9th. Both teams did extremely well for their first time in the tournament and were very competitive.
SMC Grade 2 Boys Visiting
This Friday we welcome the Grade 2 boys from St Mary's College for their second visit. We organise these visits annually around this time, as an introduction for the boys to SVC. It also gives our aspiring leaders in Grade 5 an opportunity to demonstrate their leadership skills as they take some activities with the younger boys.
Led by Grade 5B
Thank you to Grade 5B who led our assembly on Monday. The prayer written by Grade 5 was a reflective and informative prayer in the lead up to Remembrance Day. Thank you to Edward Turnbull, Ryan Lamprey, Andrew Mooney, Hamish Godfrey, Liam Quinn, Ryan Mee, Sebastian Lynch, William Anderson and Lewis Williams who spoke well and led the prayer. It was also wonderful to recognise the good work of some of our boys with merits and to celebrate birthdays.
Grade 5 Camp
Next week our Grade 5 boys will be heading off on their annual three-day camp to Port Arthur. Staying at Port Arthur Holiday Park, they will be visiting the Historic Site to learn more about our convict history, as well as exploring some of the natural formations such as Remarkable Cave, Tasman Arch and the Blow Hole. On Day 2 they will walk into Crescent Bay. We look forward to hearing about their camp adventures next week.
JSSATIS Athletics Carnival
Today, the athletics team are competing at the JSSATIS Athletics Carnival at the Domain Athletics Centre having competed at the STCPSSA (Catholic Primary Schools event last Friday). Mrs McCullagh and Mrs Read will be accompanying the boys. We wish them all the best for the events they will be participating in. A full wrap up of both carnivals will be in next week’s newsletter.
SRC Initiative: Fair Week!
In Week 7, which is November 22 through to November 26, we will be having Fair Week at the Junior School. Each day we will have a different food theme. For example, we will have Milkshake Monday, Taco Tuesday, Wedges Wednesday, Ice Cream Thursday and Fairy Floss Friday. On the Friday, in the afternoon, we will also be holding our traditional class stalls. More information will be shared in the coming weeks. If you have any availability to help at lunchtime on any of these days, it would be appreciated.
