Year Five News

Written by the Year Five Team

Dear Year Five families,

We’re just about there!

It has been a massive year across the board. From new teachers to the beach program, Athletics Day to lockdown, Schoolbox to Virtual Camp, returning on site and everything in-between and along the way. Throughout it all, our Year Five cohort has done it with style. They have been principled, committed, risk-takers and thinkers. Last week’s three-way conferences were a perfect opportunity for the students to showcase what they have learnt, despite all the challenges they’ve faced. We could not be more proud of the resilient and balanced learners they all are.

Literacy

In Literacy, students have consolidated their understanding of Poetry and linking to our Unit of Inquiry, have created poems about their chosen social issues. We have been so impressed with the quality of writing across the cohort and student’s ability to embed multiple poetic devices within their pieces such as alliteration, onomatopoeia, imagery, line breaks and stanzas.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have continued to explore geometry through shape, measurement and angles. Using their prior knowledge, they have created fantastic pieces of art, featuring parabolic curves, curves of pursuit, and geometric patterns. 5B and 5D have extended these concepts, applying them to their Christmas door designs, taking their mathematical thinking and using it to spread some holiday cheer.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students had the opportunity to showcase their art pieces on their chosen social issue. Throughout the term they have explored a social issue and art medium of their choice and were able to collate this learning for their final exhibition presentation. We saw a range of pieces on issues such as climate change, homelessness, racism and gender inequality utilising art mediums of paint, drawing, sculptures and videos. Students created poems and artist statements to accompany their pieces and explain their artistic choices.

From all four Year Five teachers, our E.S. staff, the specialist teachers and everyone else, we want to say congratulations to the students for leading the way and to the families for their vital support. May next year see our students successfully continue their educational journey!
