Dear Year Two Families,
Congratulations to all students in Year Two for finishing a challenging yet successful year! Despite the lockdowns and constructions, you have grown so much academically and personally. A huge thank you to our wonderful community for supporting their children during Remote Learning this year. We wish every family a wonderful end of the year season celebrations! Best of luck to our students in Year Three here at Saltwater P-9 College!
Reading
Within the past fortnight, students have been focusing on the reading comprehension strategies of inferring and retelling. Students have shown a high level of engagement through watching effective videos, listening to wordless picture storybooks and annotating pictures to help them infer. They’ve also participated in a read and retelling lesson where they were asked to retell what happened in a story through the use pictures to help them retell a story. To conclude, in Week Nine and Ten, the Year Two students were provided with opportunities for buddy reading and choral reading. These both focused on developing fluency, expression and engagement, with the end goal of becoming better readers and building higher levels of confidence.
Writing
For writing, the students successfully published their class book innovation texts from Book Week, taking pride in their finished product. Most of the Year Two classes were able to share their books through their Schoolbox pages and display them in the classroom. While going through the process of publishing, the students exposed themselves to different technological applications which made the book more interesting, working with the book structure, the colour display for the illustrations and more. Further, the Year Two learners, have continued editing, revising, conferencing with their teacher and publishing their text innovations for, ‘WeirDo 17’ by Anh Do. What an exciting time it has been for all to share their vibrant imaginations by transforming the story and adding new characters in amazing, exaggerated events, with their classmates and their teacher! How proud teachers are to see students achieve their 'Realistic Fiction' writing goals! Well done all!
In the spirit of Christmas celebrations, the students wrote a letter to the Class Elf. While feeling excited and having fun writing the letter, they reintroduced themselves to the persuasive devices such as alliteration, emotive language, repetition, and rhetorical questions to make sure they can convince the Class Elf to visit their class. The students had an opportunity to work with letter structure such as opening and closing greetings, paragraphing and more.
Mathematics
To wrap up the year, students have enjoyed participating in various maths lessons delving into the areas of calendars, division, money, place value and symmetry. They’ve loved having the opportunity to use digital technologies to solve mathematical problems, as well as revising learned topics during the year.
Inquiry
For Inquiry, the students have continued to explore their chosen celebrations or commemorations while it is embedded into our Literacy and Numeracy lessons. The learners utilised their research into Christmas celebrations to connect to the Christmas door and window decorations they are working on, to make learning fun and exciting for the end of the year.
Christmas Doors
Every classroom across the school has been busy creating their class' Christmas doors and/or windows. Next time you're in to drop off or pick up your child, we encourage you to check out your child's amazing work, alongside their friend's classrooms. Lots of student voice, creativity, hard work and fun has gone into making these. We hope these Christmas creations bring you as much joy as they've brought to us.
Year Two Reminders
iPads: Every morning, students’ iPads should be fully charged and ready to use for classroom learning. Please ensure your child brings their iPads every day as they're a massive part of their learning.
Uniform: With the heat upon us, hats must be worn. Our sun smart 'no hat, no play' policy applies. Sunscreen is recommended to be used regularly. As per policy, teachers are not allowed to put sunscreen on children. Therefore, we advise parents to put sunscreen on their children before the day commences. Students are more than welcome to apply sunscreen themselves before going out to recess and lunch.
Drink Bottles/Fruit Snacks: Please send your child to school with a drink bottle full of water and pieces of fruit and vegetables for eating on the go! Regular food and water breaks are good for our brains!
Wellness: To keep our community safe, please ensure if your child is unwell or showing any symptoms, to strictly stay home. If they come to school with any symptoms, they will be sent home immediately.
Homework: Studentsare to engage with reading for 20 minutes as a requirement for their home learning every day. It is an expectation that their reading log is checked and signed by a parent/guardian accordingly. Students can read their assigned books on PM readers, a book from the recent collections on Epic or a hard copy book of their choice if available at home. Students are expected to use Mathletics and Reading Eggs to strengthen their Literacy and Numeracy skills by completing assigned tasks as part of their homework. Please ensure all take home books are returned to your child's classroom before the last day of term.
Take Care and Stay Safe!
Kind regards,
Year Two Team
