Year One News

Written by the Year One Team

Dear Year One Families,

Students have had a busy few weeks! They have been practising Christmas carols, participating in the Mini Olympics tournament, preparing their portfolios and enjoying the last few weeks with their Year One class.

Literacy

In Reading, students have been continuing learning about inferring, extending their knowledge in Guided Reading groups and applying multiple reading strategies.

In Writing, students have continued practising their narratives, focusing on writing a beginning, middle and end.

Three-Way Conferences

Students have also been working on their portfolios and showcasing how they have been PYP learners over WebEx with their teacher and parents during the Three-Way Conferences. Congratulations to all students who presented - your teachers are very proud of you!

Mathematics

As the year is drawing to an end, the students have been revisiting previous subject areas that they explored in Mathematics throughout this year such as: data, graphs, 2D shapes and 3D objects. They read the mentor text, ‘Captain Invincible and the Space Shapes’ and discussed the different 3D object names and features in the text. From here they created a three-dimensional Christmas object such as a present, reindeer or Santa Claus.

Inquiry

The students are starting to wrap up their final inquiry for the year, ‘The migration of cultures has shaped Australia’ and are reflecting on what they learned about themselves and their peers. During this time of year especially, the students have been open-minded of the different celebrations that they and others celebrate with their family such as Christmas and the traditions each family has.

Mini Olympics

On Tuesday 23 November, Prep-2 students participated in the Mini Olympics. Students collaborated really well and supported their classmates to be risk-takers throughout the day showing great teamwork. Students had rotations playing different games such as the egg and spoon race, sack race, soccer, javelin, and much more. It was a fantastic day where the students all got involved and enjoyed a big day of sports. Students received ribbons to acknowledge their efforts and finished their day with a ceremony by our PE teacher, Ms Evans. Please see below some photos from the day.

Christmas Doors and Windows

The students at Saltwater are officially in the 'Christmas spirit' and have created Christmas windows and doors. Students have been contributing with these classroom displays and are very excited to have them displayed for the community to see.

Important Reminders:

  • Please remember to keep bringing iPads to school each day, charged
  • Please remember to bring hats and drink bottles each day now that the weather is getting warmer
  • The last day of school for students is Thursday the 16th of December, students will finish the day at 2:30pm.

End of Year Celebrations

On behalf of the Year One Team, we want to wish the Saltwater community a happy and safe holiday. We hope everyone has the chance to enjoy some relaxing time with your families. The students have had a very successful year and made significant progress tackling another year in Remote Learning. We look forward to seeing everyone back in 2022.

Kind Regards

The Year One Team
