OLHC District Cross Country 2021

Dear Parents

Last Friday the OLHC Cross Country Team headed off to Eltham Lower Park to compete in the Eltham District Inter School Sport Cross Country Championships. These children had been selected from the results of the Our Lady’s House Cross Country Carnival that we held back on Friday 26th of March.

The students turning 9 or 10 this year compete in the 2km 10-year-old section, while those who turn 11 or 12 during the year compete in the 3km 11-year-old race or the 12-year-old race. Despite early dire weather predictions, the day turned out quite reasonable and the students managed to mostly run in sunshine. The track was a little wet from all the rain in the lead up but most of our runners (not all) made it around the course without getting too muddy!

This event is a stepping stone toward the School Sport Victoria State Cross Country Championships so students who finished in the top ten qualified to go on to the SSV Nillumbik Division Championships on Wednesday 26th May. We had 2 students qualify for this event, who coincidentally happened to be our Cross Country Team Captains. So special congratulations to Ollie M, 10th in the 12 boys and Summer M 6th in the 12 Girls on making it through.

Congratulations need to go to the whole team on coming along and giving it a go. Just saying yes to doing a 2km or 3km run is a fantastic show of school spirit!  Our team finished 6th overall which equals our position back in 2019, which due to Covid restrictions last year was the last time we competed.

A special thanks to the awesome team of mum’s who came along and ran the score table, it is a much better job to have than standing out in a cold windy check point, but it does put them under pressure at the end of the event, when everybody is waiting to hear which school won the overall shield, which this year was Eltham East.

One last thanks to Mrs. Cummings and Mrs. Arandt for coming along and helping with the team and to the teachers who stayed back at school and worked with those not selected to compete.
