Mario Laing - Year 9 Program Leader

St Johns Regional College Dandenong has taken its first steps to create its first ever Rowing Program by obtaining 6 brand new Concept 2 Rowing Machines from Rowing Australia through a "Move it Australia" grant.

The Machines will be used to encourage students of all ages to learn the correct sequence of movement required to row efficiently.

The school has also got hold of 4 double sculls courtesy of Olympic silver medalist Sue Chapman Popa, who has very generously donated them to the College, for the purpose of growing the Sport.

Rowing in Australia has traditionally been offered in Elite schools. As a result, many of our students have never even heard of the sport nor  the benefits it can bring.

Rowing is the ultimate team sport, it builds focus and requires great commitment and determination. The races at school level are over 1000 and 2000 meters requiring lots of training and endurance.

Students who row, love to row and excel in their studies, because in order to make the early morning training and keep on top of their work requires them to develop high levels of organisation and rowing is a sport that naturally develops focus and improved memory.

Indoor Rowing is a huge sport in its own right with National Championships and World Championships for all age groups being held every year with individual and team events.

One of the aims of the St Johns program is to compete at the Australian Indoor Rowing Championships in October.

We hope to grow the program to the level where we can have a team of 4 boys and 4 girls who can train at the National Water Sports Centre in Bangholme and compete at the local regattas over the summer and even go to the State Championships in 2022.

For the program to succeed we are looking for local sponsors to help us obtain a Rowing Trailer to be able to transport the boats to and from regattas. Sponsors names will be displayed prominently on the trailer.

Business people interested in helping out with the program should get in touch with the principal Mr Hogan by calling the school during business hours.
