Year 10 Careers Fast Track 3rd Stage - 1:1 Counselling

The 3rd Stage of CFT is underway with a great participation rate of students meeting Rob Apps, our CFT Careers Counsellor, via Teams to unpack their portfolio and discuss aspirations, preferred careers and the subjects required to complete in VCE in preparation for tertiary studies, apprenticeship/traineeship or work.    Counselling will return onsite in Pathways once we are given the green light and shall continue into Term 3.  In the meantime, we shall continue to deliver the sessions through teams.  Students that have had their counselling session are welcome to collect their Pathways & Careers Portfolio upon return to school.

To date there are still 76 Year 10 students yet to start/complete the career quizzes.  Please check with your young person to see if they have completed Stage 1.  We shall be sending reminder emails to students and parents this week.  Students can only attend this very beneficial career interview if they have completed the CFT quizzes which creates the Personal Learning and Career Pathway Portfolio.

This program is very different from the Year 9 Morrisby portfolio which was more centred on the student’s aptitude.  The CFT program focuses more on personality, values, learning styles, preferences to further study, career and work with both programs complementing each other.

Year 9 My Career Insights - Morrisby Online Program

Year 9 students were recently sent some information regarding the Morrisby Online program posted on teams.  Students complete a series of aptitude based assessments in Verbal, Numerical, Abstract, Spatial and Mechanical through the Morrisby Online program.  This forms part of an overall career planning process for young people.  Recognising the importance of learning, career planning skills over time and understanding their individual strengths and preferences.

The Morrisby program is designed to assist students:

  • make informed choices about subject selection, vocational education & training, Snr secondary school certificates and further study
  • Learn about the skills and abilities they can bring to a job
  • Find out what jobs match their abilities, interests & personality
  • The subjects required to meet the needs of these jobs

So far, 42 students have completed the online questions with a further 41 students that have activated their account or are in the process of completing the activities.  Students are reminded to return the parental consent form located within the Year 9 Team file asap.

Once the whole Year 9 cohort has completed this, the portfolios will be sent to the printer in preparation for the individual counselling session in Term 4.  This session will be conducted by a Morrisby trained Careers Practitioner who will explain the report including possible jobs that match the students abilities, interests and personality.  Parents are welcome to attend this session.

Barista Training Sessions Update

Barista training will return to VSC once we have been given approval to run programs onsite.  There are still 5 sessions to be delivered to enthusiastic Barista students keen to fire up the coffee machines and create volumes of coffee for appreciative staff.  Students enrolled in the sessions will be messaged when we have the return dates and posted to the wider community via Compass.

  • 15-16 September

The Defence Force will email the students and the school if their application has been successful!

All DWEP placements will be conducted in accordance with our COVIDSafe plan and are subject to relevant State/Territory COVID-19 Guidelines and Defence Restrictions.  Please be aware that this may result in a placement being changed, postponed and/or cancelled at short notice.

Work Experience

Work Experience participation is optional at VSC, however we strongly encourage all students aged 15yrs+ to get involved in this very beneficial and rewarding program.  Students can undertake Work Experience every year until they graduate VSC.

Work Experience provides young people with a taste of the real world of work and a clearer understanding of a particular industry or business they may be interested in pursuing in the future.  It assists in career discovery and exploration, goal setting and decision making whilst preparing students for VCE, future tertiary studies, apprenticeship/traineeships or full time work.

There are no designated time frames for students to complete placements as we believe a flexible delivery arrangement provides students with a better opportunity to meet the availability and operational time frames of businesses and industries within the community. This also means we are not competing with other local schools which can limit student’s placement opportunities.

Placement dates are arranged through consultation and negotiation between the employer, school and student to maximise the experience.  Drop into Pathways to discuss further and collect the Preparing for the Workplace pack.  However, if your young person is not going on the Central Australia to Darwin trip, they may want to consider the last week of Term 3 as the perfect opportunity to undertake work experience.

Career Development is the lifelong process of managing life, learning and work (paid and unpaid) over our lifespan.  The ability to make informed decisions, manage and transition through change for a personally determined future.

Young people build their career development through self-awareness; understanding how they make decisions and how these decisions impact future aspirations.  Through identifying interests, values and preferred learning styles through careers exploration activities such as Morrisby in Year 9 and Careers Fast Track in Year 10.  The ability to research a wide range of career options helping them to select subjects they may enjoy learning whilst aligning to tertiary course pre-requisite requirements in the future.

Additionally young people juggle the expectations and requirements of school, extra-curricular activities, sport and family responsibilities, part-time work and social interests which further enhances their evolving Career Development.
