FIRST AID - CONCUSSION

By Pip Dudley

FIRST AID SERIES

This is the first article in a new first aid information series. Team managers and officials recently took part in a zoom discussion held by paramedic Matt Pitcher, a member of the Mens Premier League team, around issues concerning concussion in sport. The information was really useful and we identified other areas that we can cover in future editions of TEMpo, such as ambulance procedures, defribillators, soft tissue injuries and first aid education. Other suggestions for topics are welcome.

CONCUSSION IN SPORT

There is growing concern in Australia and internationally about the incidence of sport-related concussion and potential health ramifications for athletes. If managed appropriately, most symptoms and signs of concussion resolve spontaneously. However, complications can occur, including prolonged symptoms and increased susceptibility to further injury.

Concussion recognition and management requires awareness and understanding by team managers, team mates, officials, parents and spectators. There are many resources available, below are some of them, everyone is encouraged to familiarise themselves with signs to look out for and how to manage.

Team Resources

All TEM team managers have been provided with copies of a Concussion Recognition Tool, and the TEM Concussion Policy. The files are here:
