Term 2

Melbourne Museum Excursion

To tie in with our current inquiry unit looking at the past, Junior School had an exciting excursion on the 21st of May. With the help of 6 lovely parent helpers we headed off the the Melbourne Museum to spend the day exploring the wonderful histories of Melbourne.

We had a guided tour through the exhibit of the First Australians, learning a lot about the history of Aboriginal people in Victoria. Other places we visited included the dinosaur and bug walk, as well as the Melbourne exhibit.

A very tiring but rewarding day with even a few closing their eyes for a sleep on the bus ride home!

Literacy

We have been continuing our focus on Narratives during writing time this term. The students have begun to come up with some very interesting characters with unusual and bizarre skills and problems to solve.

During reading we are practicing the skill of visualising, or making movies in our mind. This helps students to make a picture of what they are reading to help have a better understanding of what they are reading.

Numeracy

Our focus for numeracy has moved on to addition and time. The students are learning different strategies to solve addition problems including counting on from the biggest number and using a number line to solve sums.

We are also exploring analogue clocks and remembering what the different hands on the clock tell us. Feel free to point out the time on analogue clocks around your home or community to continue encouraging students to develop this skill.
